    The Spawning Pits

I have tried several times to complete this quest and each time I fail miserably. I am more than capable of dealing with the creatures but still ending up meeting my end in the quest. When ever I get into the quest I use the Jewel of Judgement to let me know exactly what I will be facing. I then go ahead with their terminations. When I use the Jewel to peruse the dungeon other than the quylthulg's then monsters don't seem that plentiful or of the summoning sort, yet things just seem to keep appearing.

I was wondering is this leverl timed so that every so often new monsters spawn? And if so how on earth are you ever meant to kill them all?

I have included a char dump. It's Zangband that I'm playing.

I'm surprised that nobody has answered this yet. Did anyone do this quest in competition 64? I think the Entroband fixed quests are mostly unchanged from the ZAngband ones.

You may want to put a prefix in your post subject so people who are familiar with Z know it's a Z question whilst browsing the forums. Like "[Z] The Spawning Pits"

      I know nothing about it.

I don't think so - neither of Cave Man's two characters did it, and no-one else got to a level where they would have stood a chance against a Danger Level 65 quest.

I've tried the spawning pits in Zangband a couple of years ago. If it is still the same then it is from the beginning only populated by quylthulgs. Everything else appearing is summoned by them. The trick is to at all cost try to stay out of their line of sight and/or avoid waking them up. Try to kill them of one by one, for example by casting some ball-spell into a wall next to one of them while standing on a square where you're not seen by him. I can't remember if this works for all of them but it does for some. High stealth is of course a great bonus.

          Good luck,

          thapper

In Heng and Entro the Spawning Pits quest is a lot easier if you have access to Nature magic. Wall of Stone is teh aewsom.

Spawning Pits is a brutal quest for most classes. I played a LOT of Entro and Heng, and I've only bothered to beat it once or twice. For most, the return isn't worth the risk and the effort.

Assuming Entro, the Qs can see invisible and start awake, so sneaking up on them won't work, to say nothing of trying to charge them across a large open area (like most of the map of Spawning Pits). Additionally, I'm 90% sure they will start summoning on you when you are still 1 square out of LoS, and I'm 100% sure that if you are out of LoS while hitting them with a ball-type attack, they can retalliate by summoning onto you. Either way, standing back and raining Area of Effect attacks on them doesn't work very well. Finally, they're fairly fast and do nothing but summon or, if you get close, teleport themselves away (if you don't hit very hard or aren't very fast, they'll probably be able to teleport away before you can kill them).

So, how to deal with them? Well, as a Chaos Warrior, you probably have access to the Chaos School of magic. If you're feeling cheap, you can just *Destruction* the crap out of everything, which will take care of the summons. You're probably pretty fast at this stage, so you could just bring a stack of teleport scrolls, and read 'em. If you end up close to a Q and get another move before it can teleport, just cast *Destruction* and no more Q. If you feel like working a bit, you could just cast *Destruction* to foul up LoS, letting you get a lot closer to the Qs before jumping on them.

Otherwise, the best way to kill a Q is to constrain its ability to summon by reducing the open space around it. As Dzhang noted, Wall of Stone is great for this. Just start filling everything up with walls of stone, like you were going after the Babble in the Arena. Alternatively, some classes (using Trump Magic or other abilities) could dig an anti-summoning tunnel (you kids these days still remember what those are, right?) and teleport the Q (generally they resist teleport but aren't immune) into the anti-summoning corridor. It might still teleport away, but at least its ability to summon is likely severely constrained and you can whittle them down. If you've got the Anchor, you might be able to turn it back on and pin the Q in place.

Alternatively, if you really hit hard and can teleport yourself, but not it, you can try doing a directed teleport to get yourself next to it and hope to kill it in a round or two before it can get away.

Regardless, its a lot of work and dangerous. Do it once to check it off your list and don't bother ever going back.
