V vs V?

Well, after not playing for sixteen years, it's amazing how I didn't forget a single key command. It was like riding a bicycle. I gave a half dozen or so a test drive, but I think NPPAngband is the one for me right now. It is what it is: a nice blend of Vanilla, with sprinkles of Variants, and just a hint of nutmeg.

I'll probably be sorry I ever sought out this game again.

So what does "NPP" stand for? I feel stupid I haven't figured it out yet. Most of the times it's fairly obvious where the variant prefix comes from.

No pet peeves. It is supposed to be vanilla with the rough edges smoothed, and with a little spice.

Npp is one of my favorites. Most of the time I play Sangband. I like the item forging abilities, you don't have to worry about artifact hunting, and you develop your character with selected skills. It has 4gai, the enemies are smarter, the item descriptions are detailed and actually tells you what an item looks like. (Don't understand why this isn't implemented in V). Also it has a more realistic class profession spellbook, taken from Oangband. It takes a while to get used to, but just in my opinion this variant has the most modern interface, and more free-form gameplay, than the other bands.
