    Yes, one D10 gives equal values from 1 to 10, so its avarage value is:
    (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10)/10 = 5.5

    and 80D10 is around 80 x 5.5 = 440.

    Monster mana bolts do Xd10 where X is the monster's hit dice. Eol has 80 hit dice. So 80d10 does an average of about 440 damage (corrected, thanks Arendil). Eol is one of a number of monsters that the next revision revises to appear lower in the dungeon; he was imported from V which has a rougher scale. In the next version he'll be level 69 rather than 49.

    But this is helpful because it alerted me that Z used a 1-50 scale for monster HD, while V must have used a 1-100 scale. Even the Serpent of Chaos has only 50 HD. (each is a d504, but still...) So in the next version, that'll be toned down, and the absolute max a Mana Bolt can do will be 500 HP, though much more likely around 250.

That seems rather a lot of damage for an unresistable attack, particularly from a depth 49 monster (Eol the Dark Elf). What's the maximum damage that a mana bolt can do? Previously I'd never seen a mana bolt do more than 200 damage, let alone 400.

    The game should not be giving you "Scruffy Looking Hobbit and friends" quests, because there are no "friends" lower level than the Scruffy Looking Hobbit other than Smeagol, Farmer Maggot, and Bullroarer. The game tries to check to make sure a monster can have followers before making such a quest, but it screwed up here because of the unique ones. So it was getting in an infinite loop trying to generate monsters when none were allowed.

    Cyberdemon: not sure what happened, but polymorph does explicitly check that the new race is different from the old one, so that didn't happen. I'm guessing there might have been a second cyberdemon. Wild magic (failing to cast a chaos spell) can sometimes summon one, and there are other ways too. Cyberdemons are not detected by telepathy, so you might not have noticed.
    Those would be reasonable explanations if not for the following:

    1) I was in a lit hallway. A second Cyberdemon would have been impossible to hide. Also, I had previously used a Rod of Detection which should have shown it.

    2) My failure rate is 0% for Finger of Chaos (40 INT, cl 36), so I don't think it was wild magic.

    At this point I'm stumped, but it's not that big of an issue... I normally don't use that spell on non-uniques unless I *want* them to polymorph.

    Bug with Chaos Channels? I was casting the spell Finger of Chaos on a Cyberdemon. I was doing plenty of damage, but then the Cyberdemon suddenly shot back up to full health. Is this an unintended effect of the polymorph side-effect? He wasn't polymorphed, and I didn't get a message to that effect, but I don't know of any other reason why he might regain all of his health suddenly.
    On the quest, I'd give up. Clear out another town of quests to get the winner ones; that one will probably not work right.

    A quest bug:

    I completed a level 69 quest from a town keep. I was expecting that the next quest might be for Oberon and the Serpent (I haven't gotten the Serpent quest yet), but was quite surprised when I saw a level 102 quest instead:

    I just got it twice in a row. The first was a huge orc pit with four uniques and a bunch of Ogre chieftans, the second was an undead pit. Thank goodness for DSM!

    You don't 'D'isarm locked things, you 'o'pen them. Moving into locked doors also works.

    Also the level feeling "You nearly faint as visions of death fill your mind" is making me a bit anxious.
    Yeah, that is kind of the point. That one is the highest level feeling you can get. It is likely to mean that there are dangerous enemies on the level, but it could also mean there are powerful items. What you won't know is if the feeling is close to borderline with "This level looks very dangerous" or way beyond it.

    Is there a difference in some of the locked doors? I have found several that when I tried to move into them it says "you fail to unlock the door" but when I try to 'D'isarm it says there is nothing to disarm. I have to run into the door repeatedly until I get a "you unlocked the door" message.

    Also the level feeling "You nearly faint as visions of death fill your mind" is making me a bit anxious.

    The game won't auto-destroy them for you, but you can use the "quick_destroy_good" and "quick_destroy_average" options to bypass the confirmation prompt when you destroy them. But that will apply to all objects, not just weapons.

    Ok I found the post but it doesn't answer my question. Say I have a nice ego weapon so I am not interested in items that pseudo-ID as {average} or {good} but I want to keep the {excellent} ones since they are good cash and one might be an upgrade. Is that possible?
