I've just found this and it's better than my current light source however I'm a bit unclear - when the item description says that it will drain you is that simply by waring it or is it if it's activated for it's special powers?

And would you swap out the star of elendil for it?

If I remember correctly, it drains XP occasionally. However, I'm guessing that you're at DL50+ if you found it and at those depths, you'll pick up XP much quicker than the Jewel will drain it. I'd wield it, unless it's got any other nasty attributes like aggravation...

Actually, it doesn't drain XP, it occasionally damages you. It does 3d8 damage or so when you activate it, and about 1 in every 1000 turns, it does about 50 damage to you. Definitely nothing to worry about.
