PDSM of Speed and didn't even use it...

    Hi All,

Having won at least once with each race and class, I am now working my way thru winning all classes for each race. Half-Troll is complete and I'm working my way thru all Mages now (4.0.5 to 4.1.3 versions).

This latest High-Elf Mage found PDSM of Speed +4 and never ever got to use it!! I couldn't give up the +Con and +Int from my WDSM 'Dissin'. Also, my base speed was 48 (or 49) so really didn't need the speed. It felt weird never casting speed, but I liked it!! As you can imagine, a High-Elf Mage of this power took out Sauron and Morgoth handily. I think I lost more potions to ice bolts than I drank.

I will say that I'm missing Half-Troll's sustain STR, Hitpoint die, and inherent regen very much. But Mages are what I like best so they are my next challenge...

i've stated this before, i find the "of Speed" EGO to be terrible. By the time one pops up, +5 Spd (at best) isn't gonna do anything, maybe take you from +25 to +30. And even in the case of a PDSM, i would much rather have Dwarven than of Speed.

And I have said before that randarts are unbalanced, if +5 speed isn't worth a sou. Yes, I prefer Dwarven, but I have used +speed, and even balance DSM of Elvenkind in a recent game.

Exactly this! It's true even of boots, where the speed gains are higher. I'd choose +2 movement over +10 speed, particularly if I'm playing a spell caster. I used to overrate speed much too highly. Resists and immunities for the win

Wachu' talkin' bout Willis? Randarts are perfectly balanced !

          the Black Dragon Scale Mail 'Edhron' (+6,+12) [16,+29] <+3, +4, +5>
          -------------------------------------------------------------------
          +3 wisdom.
          +4 dexterity.
          +5 constitution.
          +3 stealth.
Provides resistance to acid, lightning, fire, cold, poison, light, dark, sound,
          nexus, nether, disenchantment.
          Provides protection from fear, blindness.

When activated, it removes all non-unique monsters represented by a chosen
symbol from the level, dealing you damage in the process.
Takes 164 to 240 turns to recharge.
Your chance of success is 92.1%

Seems reasonable for a DL 5 drop...
