Honestly, I hate it when this happens. Those first 20 levels are some of the most fun and challenging in the game. It means you'll now have to dive deep but without the gear to back it up, so it can be a bit perilous.

However, if this happens it's always better that your class is mage or necromancer (like you). At least you'll have access to nearly all the spells in the town spellbooks to keep you alive.

And it isn't like gaining those levels is all that hard anyway. I'd much rather get the RoS<+6> or high spellbook.

For many, many years, the first 20 levels constituted 90% of my roguelike game.

Interestingly, my previous necromancer did get a RoS<+6> very early and a RoI<+6> but died to a 6-headed hydra due to lack of poison resistance.

            You don't have to.

Well you're not wrong. But it's not how my Angband brain works. For example, if I see a pit of monsters I can't hope to defeat on a level with a treasure score of 8 I don't give it a wide berth and live to fight another day, I go full on "LEEROY JENKINS!!!!!!!!"

Too bad Sky makes all the rest of our "amazing" posts pale in comparison to his. He found the same potion on DL1.

I'd much rather a powerful piece of equipment over an experience potion. Although it is pretty good to get as a Mage. Too bad the game will never give you a 5d4 dagger (+20, +25) in the early game, but it will give you stupid stuff like chaos dragon scale mail.

There's also no requirement to quaff the potion right away. Just have to be careful you don't get it shattered by a cold attack.

That only works when you know what it is.

I pretty much quaff everything and anything where I find it if I'm safe.

                      I used to do that.
