I guess nice ego/artifacts shooters are always worth carrying. And some highly enchanted arrows of slay evil won't hurt too...
If you can convincingly pretend you're crazy, you probably are.

My mage has done much more damage with the bow than with spells. I have a might +1 xbow (+10, +15) and an extra shots longbow +2 (+15,+15). On the mage with regular ammo the extra shots does:
      AVG
      bow ammo mult Ex shot
      15 + 2 = 17 x 3 = 51 x 3 = 153 / round

even an extra shot +1 of the same enchant would do 102 damage.

That's without enchanted ammo. Get some nice +9 damage ammo and this would increase to:

      15 + 2 + 9 = 26 x 3 = 78 x 3 = 234/round.

If they just happen to be slay evil or slay whatever you're shooting at, you can start multiplying again. These are excellent numbers. And extra shots gives the extra advantage of a "mini haste" as you can shoot and move a few times before the creature will catch up with you and get two shots in a row.

The trouble with archery as a mage is that his to_hit is extremely low. You should always carry !Heroism and/or ?Bless, and !Berserk if you can get it. This makes a really big difference against high-AC opponents.

I know i had a heck of a time with an Iron Golem both with the bow and with my magic. All spells seemed to "shrug off" and all arrows seemed to pile up on the floor as around the creature.

STM works, but the default action for a Mage is TA. You get no brownie points for killing a golem.

He who dies with the largest monster memory is still a loser.
