    Damage Calculator

Is there an Angband damage calculator out there anywhere? I'm interested to see how buffs like Berserk Strength affect melee damage, in particular.

i do not know of one, but as far as i can tell, the formula is:

    1. damage stat of the weapon as shown in the weapon inventory screen
    2. multiply by your speed rating, shown in character screen
    3. multiply by hit percentage shown in monster info
    4. this factor is on a Spd 0 monster.

if you drink a potion or use another buff, this will/should show in the monster info screen under hit percentage.

The average damage shown on inspecting a weapon accounts for critical hits. (That's why you see it go up if you drink Berserk Strength - the to-hit bonus improves the chance of crits.)

Does that number include improved chance & quality of crits for heavier weapons? I've never noticed the number change based on switching to a heavier weapon with the same damage and blows.

It does, the effect just isn't that big and weapons of identical dice and blows tend to also have fairly similar weights. The code's in obj-info.c, so you can have a look

Hmm. I guess crits aren't as important as I had thought.

Critical hits are included in the in-game average damage display, in the object lore calc. For light weapons, it doesn't have much effect, but for heavy, but dice weapons, it can add around 10%.
