So my dwarven priestess found a Long Bow of Power (+8, +21) and I noticed the damage of my (+3, +3) arrows was more than double of my artifact dagger (fire thanc)

So I get to wondering whether I can fire my arrows while wearing a Ring of Escape - I have 3 of those +2 speed objects. I know I can't hit because I'm afraid, but can I fire arrows. And it turns out I can! So I put 2 of them on +4 speed! buy a bunch of arrows and phase door scrolls and head on down.

My level (1150-1200) turns out to be a maze level - so not the best for my strategy- but still +4 speed. So I play for a while, not really making any headway at all - it turns out I am a really bad shot. For a while, I don't understand. Until I look at my character page and see major negatives on both to-hit and shoot to-hit. Major face-palmage when I inspect my escape rings and see that yes - they inhibit shooting accuracy.

On the plus side - I did find a Wisdom+3 amulet and Osondir, so now I am a Orb of Damage/Dispel Undead/Evil machine! Nothing like getting your mana into triple digits to improve your priestess!

Yeah, I often wonder about whether the penalties are worth it when I'm at flat normal speed. I seem to always conclude "no," but I bet I'm missing some situations.

It may be a good swap for running from early orc hordes or uniques.
Also i'm not sure if ring of escaping does affect your device skill? I thought not.

It still may be viable choice for a gnome mage then, that 5% does not look horrible compared to +4 speed (40% speed bonus), i guess the penalty does not even stack?

Good point. Yeah, you're either afraid or you're not.

The device penalty is fairly negligible & the shooting penalty is minor if you are fairly accurate to begin with, 1.4x speed makes up for a lot of missing with a shooter.

Not sure if this thread inspired me or just circumstances, but right now my CL20 BG has been alternating between 2 =Open Wounds and 2 =Teleportation, and has been for like 5 levels.
