    Ranger spell limit

    Hi everybody,

I play again to angband after a pause of...several years!

I choosed a ranger, and i am very pleased with him.

But i have a question regarding his spells.

i am currently level 27 (with 18 in INT) and it seems that i can only use spells from the first book : Lesser charms.

Strange because i can still learn 3 spells.

But when i try to browse the second book (gifts of nature), nothing happens.

Is the ranger limit to the spells of the first book?

And if not how to gain access to other spell books?

    Thanxs for your help.

Ranger has only one town book (a very well selected collection of spells I think). Spell stat is wisdom.

I'm currently playing one, having fun!

You can find other spell books in the dungeon or sometimes in the black market.

Feature request: Now that full-caster and half-caster book are 100% separate, maybe it would make sense to call them with the class name rather than with a generic 'realm' that may be confusing: "you see a ranger spellbook [lesser charms]" vs "a druid spellbook", "a priest prayer book" vs "a paladin prayer book".

A more general fix that I'd love to see happen someday would be that when you go to cast a spell, you get taken to a page that lists all of the spells your class has access to, broken down by spellbook, with a separate letter for each spell. It would of course disable books you don't have in your inventory. But this would mean that

          a) all spells can be unambiguously and consistently accessed with the same keystrokes, regardless of where a book is in your inventory.
          b) big rearrangements like were done recently don't trip up players used to the old ways, because they can see what they're missing.
          c) there's fewer keystrokes needed to cast anything, as you don't need to select an item from your inventory.

If you object to the spoilers about what late-game books exist and what spells are in them, the display could just show you the books you do have and then say "plus N undiscovered books". That does mean however that players who expect there to be a certain number of town spellbooks will still be confused.

Wow, Derakon, that's quite a departure from how it works now, but it... seems... only... better? Browse should stay the same, I think, to make it more obvious which spells are coming from which books.

That would be cool, though I always set up (a) and (c) as part of my initial setup anyway, with inscriptions and keymaps. Still, it would save that work.

As Derakon says "lists all of the spells your class has access to, broken down by spellbook" which i understand as spells shown in blocks and above all block with different color the book name would be written.
I really like this idea. I think the browse menu could also follow this for showing the spells.

To be clear, this is not my original idea. It's been suggested on the forums in the past, and generally gotten a favorable reception. Nobody's taken the time to actually implement it, is the only problem.

This was a lot less viable in the past, because the total number of spells was cut only in the most recent versions.
With 50+ spells available to full caster classes, this system would not have been practical: they would not fit all on the same screen, and there would not be enough distinct letters + numbers to give each spell a different keystroke.
Now the mage has 29, if I count correctly, so it is a lot easier.

Spells should get always the same letter. It's handy for keymaps when you have lost a book or your spell stat was reduced. I like the idea.
