Why the massive weight differences on dragon armours?

Something I hadn't noticed before is dragon armour covers a pretty big weight range. I mean they don't have to be all the same, but the big variance does seem a little odd.

yes, was one of the 3.x changes. All armours were changed to make base AC and weight correspond with one another.
