    Idea: starburst nests for insects

Pretty much the title. Humanoids look fine in square rooms. Ants and centipedes do not. For the canines some variants have kennels.

Well yes & no? LOS would be different, phase would be different & it would look different when you used mapping

Gameplay-wise, another change would be that after mapping the level you can tell the content of pits apart from afar without even getting close to them.

Imagine if graveyards had the shape of that skull-and-bones special room. That shape would be known immediately to mean "lol nope" directly from the other side of the level. I'm not sure if it would be a good thing.

Information about monsters through mapping can be good or bad. Your undead example is the bad case. Bats flying around chasms, centipedes & spiders hidden in rubble are potentially nice touches. Interestingly the code already has 99% of the infrastructure. You can place "packs" around terrain similar to pack leaders. Or via special rooms. Or via theme levels such as the moria level. I might end up playing a bit here.
