Ironically, as low-res as those screenshots have been compressed to, the tiles version is the more readable. This is a very unusual case; mostly tiles stink for screenshots.
Based on the tiles, that's clearly a pit of some sort of biped, most likely of orcs. If you're able to post a screenshot showing particular monster tiles, though, it means that you've detected the monsters, either with telepathy or a detection spell. Once you've done that, and before taking any other actions that would clear the detection result, press "l" (lower-case L) to switch to look mode. In look mode, the function of the direction arrows changes from moving your character to moving the cursor around the map. You can use this to identify exactly what is represented by any symbol that you see. Once you're done, press escape to return to normal mode.
