Rogue stealing?

Probably a dumb question, but playing a rogue, how do you steal from monsters?

I'm trying a rogue for the first time in years, and can't find the command... Thanks!

Ctrl together with direction key.

Thanks! Does stealing always wake up a sleeping monster - or am I just not good enough at it yet?

I like holding the CTRL key down while standing in a corridor and killing monsters rushing at me. But I don't know how to do this when playing as a new Rogue.
