Unable to pick up single items in menus

    4.1.3 - Windows version

I cannot pick up single items in menus. This goes for shops as well as my home. For instance, Home Inventory
    a) a Book of Magic Spells

    I push a - nothing happens.
I click the a - and it shows: x) Examine
    d) Take
    I hit d - nothing happens
I hit x - it examines the item, ok so..

I down arrow so that d) Take is highlighted
    I hit d - nothing happens
I hit enter - nothing happens
    I click d - nothing happens

When I am in a shop and there is a stack of multiple items (like healing potions), an option appears o) Take one item - this works when I do it
The o) Take one item does not appear in a stack that only has 1 item.

    What do I do?

    (added later)
Although this is an important but seperate issue: The reason I am trying to pick up my spell book again is that I assume I must have to hold it to cast spells. I have memorized 2 spells, but whether in town or in dungeon, when I hit m, it says that I have no spells that I can cast. I am a Mage with 17 int, 3pp, magic missile and phase door are memorized.

I thought the 'g' button was used to pick up items. Although if you are playing with roguelike set on, then I am not sure as all the keys functions are different I believe.

You also need to be sure your inventory is not full, which happens pretty quickly in Angband as there are a million different items to pick up.

Yes, you'll need to be holding the book to cast spells you've learned from it.

`g` or `p` work (also in the roguelike keyset; I think the store UI is unchanged between the two). Yes, I confirm that you need to have the spellbook in your inventory to cast spells.

I really appreciate the quick replies! It is counter-intuitive to press g while in a store, rather than the item letter, especially since if you click on the item, a menu opens under it with one of the options being to press d to Take the item (which does not work).

        1) I have been trying various rogue-likes and so some things ofc change from version to version, so I am never sure what is different from one to the next. I would have thought that since you learnt the spell, you would not need to lug the book around. Can you then cast spells directly from the book that you have not learnt (like in some rogues?). If so, what is the point of learning spells?

        2) I bumped into a wandering merchant in town, trying to chat with him (as happens in some rogues). I tried various combinations of c and t first, none worked, so I bumped him. That attacked him and (despite having missed him,) now he chases me around town trying to kill me. I am worried that if I kill him, perhaps the town will turn against me. Any thoughts on this?

Townsfolk are just monsters with weak attacks and no experience value. Feel free to kill 'em, or if that bugs you too much, just go down the stairs and they'll disappear.

There's probably some weirdness in the mouse UI because it's not something people actually use, so there's no one to report bugs in it. Don't click on things
The Complainer worries about the lack of activity here these days.

I confirm that you need to learn the spell before casting it. Get sufficient level/spell slots -> learn the spell -> cast the spell. Both steps require you having a spellbook in your inventory. (well, OK, technically you could select the spellbook directly from the floor instead, but that's just nit-picking).
