What does Resistance do if you already have it?

I have a cloak that gives Resistance to Fire, Acid, Cold, etc. The cloak also has the Resistance Spell you can activate.

What does the Resistance Spell do when the cloak already has those other Resistances?

Sounds like you found Colluin (a sweet cloak). In Angband, there are permanent resist and temporary resists. These stack with each other, but not with themselves. Thus, having 4 sources of permanent resist fire (shield, cloak, armor, weapon, or whatever) is equivalent to just having one of those. Temporary resistance stacks with that however.

When talking about the basic resistances (acid, fire, cold, electricity, and maybe poison) You take 1/3 damage if you have one source of resistance (either temporary or permanent), or 1/9 damage if you have both. Immunity negates all the damage.

Temporary resistances are available in potions, spells, and some activations.
