Can you attack diagonally, or otherwise off of horizontal/vertical?

In rogue, you couldn't. But I noticed monsters can hit you diagonally, and archers can use 'h' to shoot any direction.

But my mage is limited to four directions, giving monsters some free hits.

Is there a way to do that?

You can fire missiles/Spells in any direction.
Also, you can choose specific targets with "*" "t"arget.

      Code:
      YKU
      H.L
      BJN
Otherwise use numpad directions. (. or g represent rest for one turn.)

As Pete alluded to, there are multiple ways to specify movement directions. The arrow keys are probably the worst of these, albeit the most obvious. You can press numbers to move, whether on a numpad or on the top row. Or you can enable the "roguelike" keyset, in which case the keys Pete quoted will let you move in all 8 directions.

You can also use the mouse; real men do not own keypads, we have our keyboards tenkeyless.

Psst, if you put an 'l' (lowercase 'L') at the end of the filename, it won't be ridiculously huge.

Why would you want such a mutilated wreck of a keyboard? Not only is it useless for Angband, but typing numeric data without a proper keypad sucks balls.

As for spellcasting, anyone using offensive magic (or ranged weapons) should get in the habit of always targeting with * rather than directional firing. Doing things that way makes it less likely that you will waste a spell or arrow by hitting the wrong direction. It also allows for powerful tricks such as LOS abuses.

you can also do diagonal moves by setting the movement delay to between 10 and 15ms (I use 11), and simultaneously pressing two arrow keys, e.g, up and right will move @ north east diagonally. I find this useful as I play on a laptop without a numeric keypad. Though, I do also use the number keys at the top of the keyboard with some regularity. Targeting with the * is also quite important.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

I do this when I don't have my bluetooth number pad available, or when it's just awkward to use (like Angbanding from bed). But I much prefer using the the number keypad.
