There's a rod of teleport other for sale - but I suspect the wand I have is better so I can do multiple casts instead of waiting on a recharge?

Rods are always good, because wands will evantually get exhausted and maybe destroyed on recharging.

Save the wand for when there's more than one monster, or for when it really matters. (Rod has much higher fail rate, especially for HT warrior.

But that would mean carrying both, which is quite hard with the inventory filling... I also do have rod of polymorph. So don't fight 9 headed hydra?

If you are doing 700 cold brand damage per turn, sure fight the hydra. Or if you have fire immunity. But it only drops gold, and it wrecks scrolls and staffs. Why risk this for so little gain? Also, polymorph is worthless.

Well I wasted a scroll of *enchant weapon*; found a tempting wand of dragon's breath as it does 200 to an area.

OK, so hydras are better to avoid. Why is polymorph a waste? Why not polymorph the hydra?

I'm guessing you're right about that.

He breathed poison I have resistance to and missed his attack and I'm still at 237/427 from his first round. Sounds like he could 1 shot me the next round.

I'm voting teleport scroll and recall.

Polymorph is not a reliable escape; most targets you would want to use it on will resist it.

Beyond that, I'm sure you can come up with workable tactics.

Since you have res poison, it can't kill you in a single turn. It has a lot of HP, so you don't want to fight it. But you can pretty safely teleport it away, especially from a distance, where its breath is weaker.

Well, my logic is that if he somehow got me from 427 to 237 in one round when it says his attack missed, how much can he do round 2 if he hits?

I'm not seeing any reliable approach but teleport and recall (or stairs if next to them). I'd like to kill it and see what loot it has, but not at all sure it's possible.

It's even worse - I just saw the message that he missed says <3x>. In other words, he took that many HP with 0/3 hits. So he could hit 3 times...
