Request for features for future versions

    Hi,
I have a request for some features for some future version:
    • Add exclusion like in DCSS. You mark an area and the game asks you if you really want to go there. I just found an eye pit and closed the door. It would be good to be able to mark the door or area so I can visually see I shouldn't go there.
    • Have some way of autotravel that would stop if disturbed (I asked if something like that existed on another post).
    • Have some form of autoexplore. If doesn't need to be particularly intelligent but it would be a way of speeding up play in areas the user feels are easy.

I have played games with the explore feature (tome4), but I dont miss it in Angband. The only time I might use it would be the very early levels. Later on, letting the bot take me places would be suicide.

You could, of course, give it advanced features, like a maximum distance to travel away from stairs, or a maximum number of turns so you can detect again. If you go down that road far enough you end up with something like the Angband borg.

Since you are wanting an explore feature, I have a suggestion for you: try to take downstairs asap and stay alive.

My counter suggestion to autotravel would be to have the alchemist stock descent scrolls.

The autoexplore suggestion comes up from time to time. The difficulty with adding such a feature is that, like Estie suggests, it'd be extraordinarily dangerous to use in the mid to late game. You need to have good awareness of what's around you well before it gets into visual range; doing otherwise runs the very real risk of being one-shot. And this is true whether you use an aggressive diving strategy or not; the power imbalance between monsters and the player in Angband is simply too large for automated exploration to be safe.

Or at least, nobody has yet come up with a satisfactory set of rules to describe a safe autoexplore.

Autoexplore in ToME4 is great... but I've lost probably 99% of my characters there to it. Usually, you're interrupted by something that instashoots you. Makes the feature completely pointless, unless you include the "disturb when monster in sight" option, just like when running.

My main suggestion was to add exclusion.
The next was to add mobe to spot B and stop if disturbed like running does.
Autoexplore in angband is only useful in very safe levels by something like HT warrior. I can understand something like that not being implemented. The other two features would be quite uswful I think.

Clearly you were trying to hide that autoexplore request.

When should you be interrupted? If your autoexplore is interrupted by detecting a snaga via telepathy you'll go nowhere, if it's only interrupted by entering LoS what's stopping you being instakilled by unresisted AMHD breath?
