    What is ImpHP?

Hey, I see ImpHP on my character sheet, and have never encountered an object or artifact that confers this ability - what is it, and has anyone ever possessed this stat?

ImpHP means "impaired hitpoint recovery"; you can get it from a Ring of Open Wounds or a curse.

Hm, feels like it should be maybe more tied to the Regen tag than to an HP tag. ImpHP could also be interpreted as Improve HP, or Impair HP (as in quantity, not rate of recovery). xRegn perhaps?

Actually, I thought it stood for "IMPervious HitPoints", that is, basically infinite hitpoints that the most powerful artifact in Angband would bestow, although that wouldn't be much fun if was actually the case.

Do people really use rings of open wounds? Usually I don't. So it seems strange to me to have an extra flag that is needed only for a rarely-used item --- that's probably why people are not familiar with it.

I swear i thouggt this meant improved hitpoints. I think TOME has items that boost your maxhp.

ToME2 has a lot of overpowered things that don't exist in Vanilla.

But I agree, ImpHP is confusing. Why not just have a ring that has no passive effects but can be activated every 20 turns (or whatever) for a CSW effect? The downside is that you're allocating a ring slot to the ability, which seems plenty bad enough to me.

                Alternatively, significantly reduce its depth.
So you ride yourselves over the fields and you make all your animal deals and your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick.

I used to use them regularly in the early game; memorably, with a mage who had his strength reduced from 18/19 to 6 and consequently had -11 speed from the burden. I solved the problem safely by melee-killing 4000 lice and spamming Open Wounds for the HP (lice are dangerous at that speed...) until I gained a level and regained my STR. The character went on to win.

But my latest characters haven't used Open Wounds; and the lesson from what happened to my mage probably isn't "Open Wounds can be useful" as much as "don't have your STR reduced from 18/19 to 6."

The main thing preventing me from ever trying out Open Wounds is that the effect never seemed impressive enough to justify trying to figure out how bad the penalty was. Otherwise, early on, all the rings are bad unless you're going for ring of the mouse, so arguably could be worth using for a couple levels. It was just never enough for me to decide not to wait for Rings of Protection, or Reckless Attacks, or single resistance.

I squelch Mouse before i even id it. By the time rings come out, you got damage, FA, stat, escape, all vying for the same slot.
Open Wounds needs to either Cure and heal more, or be scrapped entirely and made into a ring of Regen + CSW.

Amulets could likewise protect against TWO elements, including poison, and activate for resist.

There's just too much stuff in V that gets squelched the moment it's identified. Im looking at you, amulet of sustenance. DL60 native indeed.
