yes, that's true - CON is pointless at the start. but, you get 4 points of con for that one point of INT. and while it's useful to have that INT for the mana, it makes it so much easier to get a decent CON when you hit DL40 and grind stat pots (which im doing now).

There is no need real to grind at dl 40. If you have ESP, you are essentially safe at 1% fail, and completely safe at 0-fail no matter how deep you go. Without ESP, it's harder, but still possible, if you carry light rods for hallways and always map the dungeon. You'll need a keymap for the light rods. A nice defender (+4) can really help. Go on stealth, regen, and a whole lotta detection. It's the fun part of playing Mage.Comment

ah well, kinda. you are safe to teleport, but you never know where you'll wind up.
i play with two "classic" options on, Permanence (lose artifacts when leaving level, but can get the "$" level feeling) and Selling. i can't just recall out of every bad situation, at least not until i've seen what the level feeling is.
it's ok, i'm being extra careful. i generally TP out way before i'm in serious trouble.
keymaps are a lifesaver. i have one rest, and one "paa' " to magic-missile the closest mob, which is basically my variant of "h" to spam arrows.
found a randart weapon just now (useless for now as i'm wearing rings of escaping) which gives +3 INT, and a nice armor with +4 CON. just looking for a nice helm of telepathy and i should be good to go."i can take this dracolich"Comment

Right. Teleport other. But you do have to hoard away a decent stack (4-5) of rods of light, so you can be obsessive about both detecting and illuminating hallways in case of monsters getting the jump. Drop them when you get ESP, but still watch out for big 3 golems. Spear of Light works too, but uses too much mana--waiting around for mana to regen is dangerous too.
Once you get Mordy's, (or Kelek, of course) nothing can stop you, though lack of CON and ESP will certainly slow you down.Comment
