    bizzare effects (*spoilery*)

    Does (or would) any of you ever activate the One Ring when/if they find it?

    I was looking at the effects of activating the One Ring and it seems like the risks far outweigh the possible good effects. It seems to me that there's not much point in it having an activation if no one would ever use it, knowing the risk (or maybe it's just for people who don't know the risk -which is why I put a spoiler warning in the subject).

    any thoughts?
    I would think it should probably change (either make the bad effects not quite so bad or make the good effects good enough to make it tempting to use it anyway), except for the people who don't know about the risks, but it seems like there probably aren't that many unspoiled players. (especially players who get far enough to find the One Ring).

    The very last spell in the very last book of the realm of chance spells in DaJAngband is going to be "bizzare effects". It won't be as drastic as the effects of the One Ring activation, and it'll have additional effects added (of course), but it will include effects similar to all those of the One Ring activation.

    PS: I purposely did not give any details on the risks mentioned, I hope I didn't say too much anyway..

    I tried activating the One Ring once in V 3.0.6. All it did was...

    How do you do spoiler tags on this forum?

      The activations seem to be:

      (SPOILER)

      Nether Bolt, Nether Ball, Nether Everything In Sight, and Massive XP Drain...

      At least that's what I remember from my friend's experiments with it.

        The full list of activations is (v3.0.9b):

        Ten cases:
        * 1-2: Permanently drain all stats by 50 and experience by 25% (unresistable). (Like 2 potions of ruination and 1 potion of (permanent and unresistable) lose memories.)
        * 3: Dispel monsters (1000 -- much bigger than any other)
        * 4-6: Mana ball (300 -- less than Kelek's, Archon class)
        * 7-10: Mana bolt (250 -- Morgoth class)

            The draining penalties are not too bad if you wear Morgoth's crown (internal 3 + crown 125 is still pretty good). Experience doesn't matter if you are a slow player (with lots to spare above level 50).

            That said, only one of the activations is really any good. The others aren't that much out of line with standard powers by the time you get the One (and Crown).

            Of course, I haven't found the One in ages (late 1990s?)...

              Seems to me that the One is a pretty nasty piece of work for anyone who isn't powerful enough to master it.

              Which in game terms means, unless you are maxxed beyond the normal limits, there is a huge risk it will wreck you for the chance of a rare power.

              Personally from watching/reading LOTR it should randomly activate for summon ring-wraiths etc rather than some of the bizzare effects already mentioned. I think that is what happens in some varients.
