    silly angband question #4

can Uniques actually pick up artifacts now? i just left a level and lost an artifact that didn't show on the map after Enlightment.

I don't think they can pick them up but they can drop them. Those won't show up with !Enlightenment and if you don't notice it with the drop (and preserve is off or if you ID it and then drop it and forget it), it will be lost.

I'm pretty sure that you can't lose artifacts that were generated as part of a monster's drop (i.e. they spawn carrying the item), because that would be unfair. Monsters spawn all the time, so even a level clearer can't realistically see every item that ever potentially exists on a level before they leave it.

So my guess would be that you just didn't search hard enough. *shrug*

No worries. If you need a HLife swap, amulet of sustenance is just plain better. It works against all undead, not just life drainers. Otherwise, shield of preservation is very good too.

Hold Life is one of the weakest abilities in the game. A little experience drain won't slow you down much; experience is everywhere in the dungeon.

Also, were you seriously considering suiciding a character because you didn't get an artifact you wanted?

uh.. yes? i change characters faster than i change socks.

but seriously, i'm all about collecting artifacts. and clearing levels. and killing uniques. when i see a slime pit, i cannot resist. damn the fact that they ruin my gear and worth no xp at all, THEY CANNOT BE ALLOWED TO LIVE !

If you like collecting ridiculous amounts of shiny loot, have you considered playing Tales of Maj'Eyal?

Or its (now very distant) cousin, TomeNET? I just cleared an Ancient Red Dragon pit and surfaced with no less then five artifacts(two of which were really quite excellent) and as much other valuable loot as I could carry.

i played and enjoyed very much the original TOME. i'm essentially still in mourning of my first character dying. i had a chaos mutated dagger that did damage in the 1000s and got within 1 star of killing Sauron.

Well, in TomeNET you can resurrect if you choose the non-scored character mode, so there's that

if i recall correctly, in TOME you can / could resurrect without any penalty; when you die, you get sent to the Halls Of Mandos in spirit form. Essentially a 99-level dungeon, that you need to climb out of. If you do, you get revived.

It doesn't work exactly like that, as far as I remember (haven't played it in years). In Tome2, you can start a new character in "Lost Soul" form. It starts at CLVL1, with no special gear, at DLVL98. It has a few special abilities; if I remember correctly, the more relevant is pass-wall. If you manage to get out, you can continue with the normal game.

Some info from the old wiki (considered spoilers): https://web.archive.org/web/20090108...aces/Lost_Soul

Keep in mind that monsters in Tome2 are "levelled", i.e., an orc found at DLVL99 has higher stats than one found at its native level. So killing something at that level is even more difficult than in other variants.
