With all the recent talk about how 3.0.x is the pinnacle of Angband I thought I'd revisit it to see if my skills developed on "nerfed Angband" translate to 3.0.x, and to see if 3.0.x was indeed "fun" compared to contemporary Angband. I downloaded 3.0.9 from the archives and ran it, but no window opens. The process is running but nothing shows up. Is there some obvious argument or tweak or something to get it to run on a contemporary windows OS?

3.0.9 runs without problem on my win7 (virtual machine, but that shouldn't matter)
Try shift-right click on folder and select "Open command window here". On the console type, angband and hit enter. If you are lucky you might get an error message on console.Comment

I found the 3.0.9b console image runs, but there are problems with the cursor making targeting and "look"ing extremely hard since the cursor does not settle on the target. I'll try the compatibility mode, and maybe compiling from source to find the error if there is one. It's practically impossible going back to a tiny console sized dungeon screen, though.
3.0.9b is way harder than recent builds. Old mage spell mana costs make using spells other than magic missile to kill things almost impossible (and magic missile just takes too long, especially for things with powerful range attacks). So many cursed and damaging items makes IDing before use required. Decent weapons seem much rarer. Dungeon treasure is useless because everything's so expensive so items must be brought up for sale. Monsters seem harder somehow. I find myself dying a lot more in getting a gnome mage started. I find I must spam detect monsters incessantly and only let very carefully controlled groups of monsters into range at a time. I don't see how it's possible to power dive a gnome mage in 3.0.9b, just no hit points and no damage output. I finally acquired a long bow and have it up to +8, +8 so that's my best damage output for now.
Does anybody know if 3.0.9b has a magic device damage bonus to wands?Comment

p.s. I am running from the console. Running the windows exe (angband.exe), the prompt returns immediately with no error messages and the angband.exe process continues to run in the task manager, but no windows open. I'll look for a log file I guess.Comment
