    Near Death Experience

So, I decided to read some of the scrolls I had picked up on dl1 at the start of my campaign, and, as is very common when I read unknown scrolls, the first one I read was ... you guessed it! (I mean of course why or how could it be anything else? Do I even need to say what it was?

Okay, so of course it was deep descent. So things were going fine on on dl7 until I suddenly got ambushed by a hoarde of evil elves. I'm confused, blinded, poisoned, and going through health potions pretty quickly. I decide to read word of recall, and it looks like I just might survive (that also always happens when I word of recall), but I'm quaffing random potions, (berserk, nice...), but the last stack of 4 is confusion, so I'm confused, and dying of poisoning; I'm about to die from the last elf when I get yanked upwards. But I'm still too confused to make it over to the healing house and there goes my health from the poisoning, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, oh well, at least I had only just begun. And then... "You are no longer poisoned." Tee hee.

Yep, that's happened to me plenty of times before (though usually with attacks rather than poison). If your HP is reduced to exactly zero, you don't die; death occurs at negative hp only. That's probably a bug, but it really doesn't provide enough of an advantage to the player to break anything.

My proudest "near death" experience. The win in Comp 186. Note the hit points remaining and lack of any way to heal. Just kept swinging and hoped for the best. http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=18829

EDIT: By the way, this was a suicide mission win. I did the @ dump immediately upon Morgoth's demise. @ was surrounded in a sea of Morgoth's summons. There's no way @ was getting out of there alive.

“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

There's a hilarious vid on Youtube where the player dives to roughly 400ft, finds out he has no WoR, spends a lot of time climbing back up and reads an unID scroll at 50ft instead of simply taking the stairs. And of course the scroll is Deep Descent

Yeah, i had a death where I was in a room when World War III erupted and I was brought down to zero. No medicine I had would let me survive another round, so I teleported out. But I had been poisoned. So, as they say, dead on arrival.
