    silly angband question #1

do you lose xp when drained?

i've tried to test this but the "test subjects" have been less than helpful.
    let's say you have 100xp.

you get drained for 30 and go to 70xp.

now you kill a mob for 6 xp and total 76xp.

if you use a restore xp, what score do you go to? 100? 106? something in between?
i'm in the habit of waiting until a XP-draining mob is fleeing before i quaff a restore (which i stack maniacally), and then kill him with ranged so as to not lose any potential XP in the process.
i also read someone saying that xp drain was a "non issue", so ..

if you have drained XP, restore XP will restore you back up to what you had before you were drained, so in your example, 100. Any XP gained while drained doesn't add to your max score.

I thought that when drained, experience gained went something like 80% to your current score and 20% to your max score? I'm pretty sure you still make "progress" in max XP even when drained.

Ah this just proves I shouldn't make authoritative-sounding answers without checking the source You're right, but it's 10% towards your max.

10% is pityful, practically you lose the whole lot; consider that most mobs on a level will be say, 30xp when the one good mob is 30k. getting only 3k out of him means you lose the largest portion of XP available on that level, and i'm not talking iron man or anything, but when you get that one nazgul you can milk for a CL, you really want to phase + restore + ranged .

Or carry a hold life swap. It really depends what class you are. For a warrior, CL hardly matters, and it's easy to rack up EXP. For a mage, CL matters a lot, and it is relatively difficult to gain EXP.

I always try to carry restore life level potions. Before finishing off a drainer (usually he runs), I drink.

I agree, provided the drain is significant, or the drainer is worth a significant amount of experience. Otherwise, I'll save the potion for a more worthwhile situation and just claw back lost experience the old-fashioned way.

But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”
