    Newbie questions

Whilst playing a a new character last night I was struck by some code that appeared in the bottom left hand corner of the screen, that altered as I played.

    LF:3-1
    LF:1-?
    LF:3-?
Can anyone identify these cryptic postings for me?

And how do you identify some of the strange scrolls that you find in the dungeon often described in what appears to be "dog latin".
    Many thanks,
    Peter

I'm fairly new to this too, but I think I can help you out. The LF is the level feeling. The first number is how dangerous the monsters on the current level are from 1 being fairly safe to 9 (or 10, I'm not sure how how it goes) being very dangerous. The second second number starts as a question mark, and tells you how valuable the loot on the current level is. You have to explore a little to get a feeling for that.

To identify the scrolls, you need a scroll, staff, rod, or spell of identify. Or you could just read the scroll to find out what it is. The scrolls you get in the beginning usually won't have any dangerous effects, or at least that's what I've found.

      Yep, what he said.
The feelings go up to 9, so the ideal level would be LF: 1-9.
And yeah, just read them, the most lethal is probably Deep Descent (and that's often a blessing in disguise!).

Also, as an extra protection, you can read any new scrolls when you are ready to go down to the next level. That way if you read a summon monster or undead scroll and end up with some baddies that may be too hard to handle, you can simply go down to the next level and avoid the fight altogether.

To give credit where credit is due, I learned this tactic by watching Fizzix's let's play angband series on Youtube.

Hooray! Another shout-out for Fizzix's "Let's Play Angband" series. Hands down, they advanced my playing almost overnight.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

Thans for all of the posts. I'll try the uTube mentioned in a subsequent reply.
