    Question about "special" feelings

Has something changed to the "special" feeling message? I am playing 3.0.9b with "Don't Preserve Artifacts" set to "yes", but I have not once gotten a special level feeling, from pits or artifacts. Usually they give me "superb" instead, so I thought maybe the name had just changed, but just now I went down a lvl, got a "good" level message, and did a Detect Objects, and sitting on the ground on the other side of the dungeon is a Dagger (2d4) which is assuredly either Narthanc or Dethanc (already got Nimthanc earlier).

Is preserve now somehow set to be "on" permanently?

Update: It was Dethanc, and level feeling was "good". So either I'm misunderstanding how the preserve option works (it was set at birth to "yes", meaning preserve is OFF), or there's a bug.

It's been fixed in the dev version, but basically you should play with preserve on until it gets brought out. The game's balanced that way and has been for some time.

        Which way is which?

So in 3.09b which way gives the special message; setting the option to yes or no?

I used to play that you would get a special message and an artifact lost was gone forever. I tried to set it to that but it didn't work - at least I got no special levels.

Or are you saying the code to call a level special is broken and there is no warning about artifacts either setting yes or no?

I am starting again and want to try to get it right.

        ----------------------

I have been playing again after a long time and got as far as I have ever gotten. Got to level 53 and had just found +18 to my speed (boots of feanor to replace my +7 shoes and some Xbow with +10 speed for a max of 38 with spell) when Vecna killed me. Never fought Vecna before -did 546+ hp with a mana storm I think.

How many hp do you need to have to survive a mana-storm anyway?

        --------------------------

And totally off topic, but I love the squelch feature. An excellent idea and improvement to the game.

            Neither.

            I disagree entirely.

So ppl like having the dungeons filled with useless junk you have to sift through? I got tired of having to destroy it all. Or is it the implementation isn't completely right?

It's an excellent idea in the same way that disposing of rubbish in landfill is an excellent idea-- you just shouldn't be producing the stuff that'll be thrown away in the first place. This is what I've been working on in 3.1.0, which I can play fairly happily without squelch at the moment.

I've found 4 artifacs in my current game (my first 4 ever, actually) and I've never had a "special" feeling. I've only had superb, excellent, etc.

Just a quick comment on Squelch. While I appreciate the attempt to produce less junk, as they say one man's trash is another man's treasure. As a warrior I often squelch the first 3 books of both classes so the auto hide squelched Items suppresses them. This also allows you to exprience the thrill of randomly testing mushrooms and potions, then never having to see them again. I think the combination of the squelch and auto hide allows you to filter fairly well and tailor for the class you are currently playing. I think it is better to leave these decisions up to the player. Just my two cents...
