A couple of questions from a noob wiiner

I've previously won with a paladin and know a lot about the basics of the game. i.e the first 50 dlvls but im a real noob when it comes to the late game. The time I won, I think I killed big P without killing many of the deep uniques so I want to ask a few basic questions.

    1) I have a base speed of 23 (boots and ring). My other ring is a ring of damage + 14. Is it better to switch out my damage ring for another speed ring? I have seen a few + 9 and above so Im just not sure what to wear.

Im playing a dwarf warrior so i have buckets of health and do around 450 damage per round, so im looking at trying to maximise my chance to win.

Also.... !enlightenment and !*enlightenment* didnt seem so different... is there any difference?

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Past base speed +20 (hasted speed +30) there is no real benefit to speed above other important considerations such as covering resistance holes or increasing damage output.

The difference between !Enlightenment and !*Enlightenment* are that the latter also provides the location of every monster on the level and an increase to wisdom and intelligence, if not already maxed. Personally, if I come across one I tend to save it at home until I'm ready to go after Sauron. That way I can descend, quaff, and locate and hunt him down instantly rather than wandering around. It's less important with Morgoth, since he will be hunting me down, however, if I find two, I save one for the Morgoth level. Who knows? Sometimes he's trapped in a vault and I can use knowledge of his whereabouts to my advantage.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

There is still a benefit to speed past +30. However, you start hitting diminishing returns on speed points at (IIRC) +27. That means that any given point of speed increase might or might not actually really make you faster. Consequently, other bonuses like CON, +damage, and resists start becoming more valuable than additional speed as your speed gets higher.

Speed of +30 is still necessary to avoid getting double-turned by Morgoth, though, which is why it's commonly listed as a target value.

You can do some basic calca to determine whether speed, damage, or CON is more important for your character. Basically figure out how to do the most damage before healing or resting becomes necessary. Add a bit more to CON for survivability.
By base speed 22, hasted 33, damage is certainly more useful than speed.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sticking with the ring of damage for now as I can get over +30 with other sources.

Thanks Ingwe for the advice regarding ! *enlightenment. I will follow that advice next time I come across one.

I've still got a few resists to cover but will hopefully have my second winner within a week or so.

          Cheers

There's no need to cover all resists to win the game, I'll frequently win games without full-time shards/sound/chaos/disenchantment/nexus resist. Reaching 18/200 for CON and your key stat (INT for mages, etc.) is much more important. Just know the attacks of monsters you're fighting and avoid those who can deal more than you can take. Don't fight anything super big and scary (like Great Wyrms) without 600+ HPs and equal or better speed unless you know you're covered.
