    angband sound in mp3 ?

    Hi,

I want to include angband in fedora, and there is a killer: sounds are released in mp3. Why not using opensource format like ogg, flac or others ?

Migrating to opensource format will allow a better integration in unix-like system with strict rules (mp3 is not opensource), and will not impact windows user.

What do you think about it ?

You can find the sound files as WAVs at http://www.dubtrain.com/angband/

There is more background on why we are using mp3s here: http://angband.oook.cz/forum/showthread.php?t=7766 - mostly, mp3s are supported natively on OS X and Windows and no open-source alternative is.

      Thanks for your reply,

dubtrain provide these files under a CC with NC clause, which really differ from the original GPLv2.

Well, I understand your point of view, but it make the thing harder for linux-like people. Maybe provide a package like dubtrain, with only the conversion of your mp3 ? I will be glade to help of course.

Thank you again for your help,

Ah, the MP3s in the Angband download are also under CC BY-NC-SA - see copying.txt. So you have the same license regardless of where you get them from.

Too bad to hear that. The NC clause is a killer for many distro !

          Thank you for your help,

NC on artistic work is bog standard, and it should be. If you are selling something derivative which uses creative work, it absolutely should be properly licensed. This is a lotmore important than making distros easier.

NC close is prohibiting all commercial uses. I don't want to start a war about it, and it can be considered good, but this close is a kind of restrictive. This is the major problem: with a NC close, you can't do what you want with it, even if you licence it properly or quote the author. And you can't of course licence your work to a less restrictive one, like CC-BY or even any GPL compliant, if you include one with the NC close. NC is restrictive, and not free as considered by the Free Software Fundation see here: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.en.html)

It is not only a killer for distro, but also for many opensoure men.

              Thank you for your reply,
