Is a melee weapon with damage 300/round sufficient for Morgoth, or should I keep looking for something better? This is a paladin with +29 native speed and a decent stock of healing...
While doable with that, it should be no trouble to get a great weapon with either slay evil or extra attacks and damage in the range of 500. I am not sure what takes fewer turns - fnding such a weapon and a short fight, or a long fight with your current weapon, assuming you have a sufficient amont of consumables - but its certainly easier to do the latter.
Also, with 29 base speed, consider replacing some of your speed with +damage. Speed beyond +20 (+30 buffed) isnt vital and also not very effective.
I would love to have my real speed displayed on the character sheet, to be able to get an estimate when it comes to damage vs speed.

Thanks!
In a world where MattB has killed Morgoth with a store bought shovel, and others have taken him out with fists, your weapon can definitely do it. However, if you want an easier time of it, try to get something that is at least 350 or more per round.

The difference between +30 speed and +35 speed is between 38 energy/game tick and 40 energy/game tick, which is a 5% increase. +40 speed is 42 energy/game tick, or a 10% increase relative to +30. So if you sacrifice less than 10% damage to get the extra +10 speed, it's worth it.
(NB the table of speed <-> energy is now in game-world.c)

Having high speed is actually somewhat better than this kind of analysis suggests, because Morgoth is also causing problems for the player that you cannot just ignore, and does so at a fixed speed.
In 100 game turns Morgoth will get 38 actions. Let's estimate that once per every three Morgoth actions, you will be forced to take a defensive action like healing, banishment or TO. That's 13 defensive actions per 100 game turns. (The exact number will depend on your max HP and to some extent on your defenses, but not on your speed.)
In 100 game turns a +30 speed player will get 38 actions, a +35 speed player will get 40 actions, and a +40 speed player will get 42 actions. But all of the players will have to spend 13 of those actions defending, rather than hitting Morgoth. So the number of rounds of attacks they get in is in the ratio 25 to 27 to 29, which is an 8% increase for the +35 speed player and a 16% increase for the +40 speed player over the +30 speed player.

Remember that Morgoth has BRAIN_SMASH attack which, if not resisted (via saving throw), will actually slow you. So unless your saving throw is 100%, I'd suggest having +30 speed (unhasted) vs Morgoth to avoid possible double moves.

All irrelevant if you fight Morgoth in a destructed area. Rather than take a defensive action while in range (unless you are standing on a rune of protection, in which case you don't want to give up the rune), you read a ?Phase door removing yourself from line of sight. Take the defensive action (healing, banishment, etc.) and also use the intervening time of Morgoth's return approach to buff up @ for the continuing battle. +20 speed (+30 hasted) is totally sufficient to take on Morgoth.
