Mage vs Morgy ? Help please!

First ever time I've gotten any char past dlvl80 or so, and I'm thinking this character is totally ready for Morgoth and anyone else could take him out...

But I'm constantly failing! Other uniques are so easy it feels like cheating, with the hockey stick trick I learned, but that doesn't work for Morgy!

What is the strategy I should be taking? Please help

Fight him in a *destructed* area. As he approaches, position yourself in a way to maximize the amount of hockeysticky positions. If he gets LOS, he will either a) keep moving, b) summon something or c) cast a damage spell.

    If he does

    a) damage him, unless he arrives in melee range in which case phase away
    b) clear the battlefield. Easiest way is to phase to get away from the summons and change the approach angle; alternatively, cast mass banishment (but watch your hp), or teleport Morgy away and get rid of the summons, or teleport away and set up a new battlefield.
    c) heal up as necessary, and keep damaging.

You are not ready for that fight though. The 3 methods for dealing with him are melee, archery or spells. Since you dont have enough damage on your melee weapon and launcher, your only option is spells. And for that, I would want more than 16 !mana and probably also a stack of annihilation wands. It is going to be a long fight.

And be sure to cast Haste self. or use some other form of speed to put you at 30 or above.

I don't use the *destruction* method when I fight him with a mage. Instead, I fight in an open space and stand a distance from him. I than spam manastorm at him TO'ing the uniques he creates (I usually kill off the big baddies prior to our encounter) and mass banishing other summons. When he gets close, I either phase to the other side of the open space or TO him, heal and restore mana, wait for him to return. This method requires a decent stack of !restore mana

Alternatively, if there is a vault that has long corridors, I'll lure him in there. And manastorm the heck out him.

All 3 of my wins have been as a mage and I agree that mages are better fighting in a bigger room where you can be hitting him from a distance with things like mana storm and annihilation. Mass Banish his summons and phase door when he gets next to you.

Keep your speed at least 30 and be ready to drink !heal, !*heal* and !life any time you get below 600 hp.

You have a nice MoD Holy Avenger. Put on Anarrion and Caspannion and take Morgy in melee. You can then get by without the ring of intelligence and replace it with Slaying. Use the Boots of speed maybe. Make sure to use multiple buffs when fighting as a mage. I don't know if !Berserk affects your casting; if not, it has a big effect on melee.

That's how i fight him with a mage, too.

My mage winners needed 5-7 potions of Healing (or rod/staff charges), and 2-3 potions of *Healing*/Life. In addition, 4-5 potions of restore mana. I'm surprised at the low numbers; i seem to remember needing much more in older days.

You are a bit low on the regular heals, but have more big heals. If you're going to use mana storm, don't be afraid to carry staffs with you; you don't allow anything to melee you to drain charges.

You can also take a big stack of cure critical wounds with you. If it's only you and him, and you're damaged, you can teleport him away and quaff several minor heal potions to save on the larger ones. If there are other monsters nearby, create doors, cast mass banishment, and heal up.

Just hit him with mana storms until he dies. If he summones weak stuff, ignore it. If he summones strong opponents, use mass banishment. Note: This works best if you killed all other strong uniques before; otherwise you might need to teleport away monsters that are summoned behind weaker monsters. When Morgoth reaches melee range, phase door if he's alone, otherwise teleport him away and wait for him to return (he will).

As somebody said, it will be a long fight. You'll need 70-80 mana storms (you have a fail rate, he regenerates). You'll need 10+ banishment / mass banishment spells. You'll need 10+ turns to quaff healing stuff. You'll need some restore mana, and some speed spells. Not counted the turns when you teleported him away and wait for him to return. But for a well-prepared mage or priest, this fight isn't dangerous at all, only tedious.

Get that MoD (Holy Avenger), find a vault with limited space, spam glyph, melee him.

I don't know if you have burned all your consumables or what, but when I go to fight Morgoth, I am going to have maxed out heal and *heal*, all the life I've accumated, maxed out restore mana, as many *destructions* as I have, etc. Go in there armed to the teeth. Then you can just rain down upon him a zillion mana storms or whatever your best damage is (if you happen to have good missile ammo, for example, or maybe even melee).

Basically, it's mana storm whenever you can, heal whenever you should (always keep at least 600hp), rune of protection whenever it is gone.

You can look at the inventory of these mages for examples...With a mage, I typically end up using 1/3 to 1/2 of all my healing stuff. I rarely ever *destruction* things, except an initial one to set the environment sometimes, so I usually end up with a lot of those left over. I am more of a teleporter than a *destructioner*.
