I accidentally wielded Calris before uncursing it

... and now, what can I do? It is still at -16 to-hit malus.
is there a way I can save my character? it's a 31 level high elf ranger, and I had never managed to go this far, that would really suck.

There is still hope. First, rely heavily on your bow for the time being. Second, you can uncurse it by enchanting it.

ok... what are the side effects of a cursed weapon? I am using it in lower levels (I'm in a level 8 now) and it is actually working well.

Calris is an aggravating weapon, so every monster will charge you, and it's minus to hit, so it's harder to hit with. Oh, and you can't remove it while it is still cursed. That's pretty much it.

Every scroll or spell of enchant weapon has a chance to break the curse in addition to adding to the +to hit/+dam. If you have a supply to get it back to positive figures it's a fairly decent weapon.

The to hit malus is not such a terrible thing, it shouldnt affect your chance to hit by too much. The problem is the aggravation which forces you to stay shallow where you can kill everything that spawns. You want to go deeper than level 8 though, to the native depth of enchant weapon scrolls. I dont know offhand what that is, maybe 20.
Another thing you can do is to buy the blessing/holy chant scrolls from shop 5 and buff yourself before entering melee; +10 to hit almost negates your malus.

Even if it's 20% less accurate than other weapons, chances are that it's doing 100% more damage per successful hit than anything else you'd be using, so you're still ahead.

Depends of the level and race/class. Priests and mages have hard time hitting anything even with basic weapons, -15 would make hitting things really hard.

Rangers can hit things more easily though. Your bow is your friend now. The worst thing Calris has is aggravation, so keep detecting monsters, they will all be awake and aware of where you are. If you see something that is too hard to handle go away from it ASAP.

Maybe thats good competition material. A priest who starts out with Calris wielded in hand ?

What's the bonuses on bless, heroism & berserk add to? If the accuracy is a problem it might be as simple as buffing if you're not.

Man, it's been ages since I looked this up, but I think Bless is +10AC/+5 to-hit, Heroism is +10 to-hit, and berserk is +15 or +20?

Helkost: where did you find Calris? That's a heck of a weapon to get early on.

thank you everyone! and I broke the curse with a to-dam scroll

turns out, I could destroy every mob I had in front even with the malus: I have 496.9 dmg against dragons, 306 against evil creatures, 369,6 against trolls / demons, and 242,2 vs others. I could stay at around lvl 30 with ease.

Carlis: found lying on the floor of a cavern at 1650' (lvl 33)

I actually had a streak of incredible luck yesterday: I got around 6 level feelings from 6 to 9 in 10 levels starting at level 20... I now have so many uniques that I have difficulty choosing what to use and what to discard. I already had to discard Narthanc, Nimthanc and Dethanc, as I had no more space in my home, and I believe I also got rid of Forasgil.

The 'thanc daggers don't have anything useful other than their elemental brands, so they're immediately trash as soon as you find something that does more damage. For that matter, the same considerations apply to most artifact melee weapons; pretty much all you need to keep are your current carry-weapon (and swap, if applicable) and the strongest-after-reaching-max-stats weapon of your inventory. If Calris is your strongest weapon, you'll want to keep the second-strongest as well, in case you decide that the aggro is too risky. But most weapons are quick drops. The tough choices in stash management are the artifact armors (and wands, for classes that use them, but Rangers shouldn't bother).
