    How deep can I dive?

My standard kit has me around -1 to -3 speed. I have 7 ?Speed and a _Speed I can use for unique or special encounters. I finally got -Teleport Other and poisResist.

Lvl 31 Ranger. 272 HP. rBase,rPois. ESP. Legendary Stealth (at the expense of melee). The +17 stealth is the most I've ever played with, and is really fun, but high level uniques still wake up. Most recently, Fundin Bluecloak was in a vault a few levels earlier, and woke up when I was about 5-10 squares away killing an ogre. I didn't have -Tother then, and ran like crazy.

I'm worried about the lack of high resists and low hp. When do creatures that can one-shot me start appearing again? I thought Cause Mortal Wounds could 1-shot me(see other thread) until I looked up the source.

PS> I spent absolutely forever enchanting up a LongBow of Extra Might <+1>. I hoarded every enchant scroll I found, and after a lucky *enchant* spawn in the BM, I finally got it to +12 damage, better than my LongBow of Power (+15dam). Then I dropped the wrong bow in town and recalled into the dungeon. ARGH! So tempted to use cheat code to generate another Extra Might Bow.

My advice would be to just be careful about detecting frequently, and you should be able to manage your encounters and stay away from anything you are unsure about. You are more likely to find better gear the farther down you go. Keep going!

Blech. I started diving pretty fast, but with Ranger I was still putting out good damage output, so I would stop for interesting vaults. I ended up at an interesting vault a little ways down and cleared or -tOther everything but a black knight. I decided to try and kill it. It summoned a Death Drake out of my LOS, and instead of teleporting myself, I -tOthere'd the black knight, and the Death Drake double moved and insta-killed me.

        Bad luck.

You mentioned that you TO'd a bunch of monsters from the vault. You've sort of ended up in a jam, in that you don't know what you'll land next to when you teleport yourself. If you TO'd it because it was too dangerous, and you land next to it, it gets the first move.

In those cases it might be better to read a scroll of phase door. It will teleport you out of the vault but only just, while all the teleported monsters will probably be far away in the dungeon.

We were already out of the vault. The death knight had followed me out when I previously ?PhaseDoor'd out. I had engaged him in quarters I felt were too tight within the vault, so I Phased, then went back to him, and set up a nice long corridor, but he summoned the Drake right after he stepped in the corridor and the DD was OOS - besides the knight was blocking any attempt to -tOther the Drake first. I still should have Teleported myself.

This is definitely one of those - next time I learn to just -tOther the death knight first, and if I decide to engage him later, only in a very open room (although I suppose the chance of him summoning a baddie who can 1-shot me who is being blocked from -tOther by the DK himself is always present). So yah, next time just -tOther the death knight, too, and choose to not engage him until much later.

Also, I guess this is a perfect example of when to ?tele-level. I wasn't carrying that form of escape just yet. Next time I will.

You probably don't need to carry teleport level at that point in the game, unless you're playing ironman or something. What you do need to do is use ESP or appropriate detection to see what's in a vault, and just walk away if you can't fight it. Or if you're in a position where you can't see the whole thing from the start, clear part of the vault by killing and TOing stuff, and then if you find something too dangerous in the remainder, just read a recall scroll, and rest somewhere far enough away that the bad thing won't start chasing you.

Also, learning what to fight, what to TO, and what to leave sleeping is important, and unfortunately the only way to learn is to die a lot, as you have just demonstrated.
