    Ego torches

    Here's one from PWMAngband:

    Code:
    q) a Wooden Torch of the Magi (5000 turns) <+3, +2, +1>
Found lying on the floor at 1600 feet (level 32).

         +3 intelligence.
         +2 wisdom.
         Provides resistance to poison.
         Provides protection from blindness.
Makes you fall like a feather. Speeds regeneration. Grants the ability to
         see invisible things.
         Radius 1 light.
This ego is probably better than any light source you may find, if you don't take into account the activation of the Arkenstone. Its only drawback? It lasts 5000 turns then burns out...

Currently, torches are not worth using because of lack of good torches. So basically you use your starting torch until you find a lantern or the Phial. It would be nice to have powerful torches that can be used once in a while as a temporary light source.

Also radius 1 light. You used to be able to "Refuel" torches with other torches.

What if there were some way to actually refuel torch? What is medieval torch anyway? Stick with some oily rag on top of it, or stick with holder for flammable material at the other end?

The former. And if you could refuel torches, then the powerful egos would be... too powerful.

I like the idea of ego torches even if they're really only useful in the early game. Maybe mages could get "brand torch" instead of "brand ammo" to ensure they could get a stack of one of these if they wanted to use them later on.

        Torch of Bravery
        rFear
        +to hit/dam (as !Heroism)

        Torch of Justice
        dispel Undead within light radius
        Damages light sensitive creatures

        Torch of Swirling Vapors
        +1 stealth
        +10 AC

        Torch of the Dwarves
        Detect treasure
        rBlind
        +3 Infravision
        Auto detect traps/secret doors

Never really looked into this, but do torches keep burning through their fuel even when not wielded?

I can imagine it being too much annoying micromanagement to carry around ego torches to just use them for a few turns when their powers are needed and then remember to switch back to a normal light to conserve fuel.

Yeah, you automatically "turn torches off" when you unwield them. Rather than attaching these long-lived buffs to an equipment slot where a player would be tempted to "optimize" their use by continually fiddling with inventory, it might be a better idea to have them as special kinds of potions. Drink a potion (or eat a mushroom, read a scroll, etc.), gain +1 light radius and pFear for 2000 turns, that kind of thing. The buffs would need to be rare enough that players couldn't realistically keep them going for a significant fraction of the game, and of limited-enough utility that they aren't tempted to stockpile them.

Actually, doesn't Halls of Mist have some kind of "you gain a buff for the duration of this dungeon level" mechanic? Maybe we should just steal that.
