    Vaults by Chris Atenasio

While implementing the new format for the vault text file in my variant, I found a few vaults that were added a long time ago in MAngband and thought they would be fun to add in V. These vaults have killed more than a few characters in MAngband, so beware

    Here they are:

So...every single one of these has '8' tiles that are exposed to the rest of the dungeon.

Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, just pointing it out.

(Well, I guess the first two don't automatically have them exposed, since it depends on where the dungeon generator decides to hook up corridors to the vault. The third is definitely exposed, though)

Having multiple 8s exposed to the dungeon *is* a bad idea. The 8s are already way too powerful and can never be handled at depth (unless you're already at level 80). Personally, I think 40 levels OoD, as the standard "tough monster" is stupid. A unique at depth is usually very difficult. A unique 10 levels OoD is impossible. One 40 levels OoD is usually, "I can't stay in LoS of this monster for a single turn or I will die." These situations are not altogether bad, but they should be very rare.

Personally, I would drop the 8 spot to 20 levels OoD max, and add a super rare spot, one or two per vault with a 40 level OoD monster and a guaranteed top level item.

Keep in mind that '8's do not guarantee that the monster is 40 levels out of depth. Just that it can be up to that far out of depth without needing to pass unusual depth checks. You still see the occasional kobold in a GCV. The original "Miniature Cell" vault was 5 '8's exposed to the rest of the dungeon, and it was quite common to see all 5 of them occupied by a zephyr hound pack (in ZAngband back in the day, when zephyr hounds were still super common).

But yeah, the potential for mayhem from '8's exposed to the greater dungeon is pretty silly.
