    Savefile breakage happening soon

    Hello all,

This is just a quick heads-up for those that play the nightly versions of Angband that sometime in the next few days savefile compatibility will be broken. This means you'll have to start a brand new character with a new savefile and your monster memory will be lost. Whilst regrettable, this has been waiting to happen for at least ten years; the object list needed a rearrange, a tweak, and all that.

I would add that until the release 3.1, items may behave weirdly because things will be tweaked continuously. You might find one kind of item spontaneously turning into another, or the like, on an upgrade.

    You have been warned!

Does this mean that the next release is 4.0? Save-file compatibility shouldn't occur on a minor release number. Also: I am not quite sure why object types need rearranging. If that is the only change, I would be happy to write a save-file compatibility fix. (Also: important posts like this belong on the newsgroup....)

Some item types are being added, some being removed, some being altered. I don't believe there is a meaningful mapping from games using the old object list to the one I'm currently working on.

A version of the game is automatically compiled every night at http://rephial.org/nightlies/ with the latest changes. Warning: these are often very buggy. (For windows only ATM.)

You also can grab the current source from svn and compile it yourself for unices (and Macs). See http://rephial.org/develop .

Over the last few days I've also set up a Mac OS X auto-build/auto-post script, so Mac nightlies will now be available from here .

svn works fine for windows as well. I find it more convenient than having to fetch the files and unzip. For detailed, working instructions see this post by Anne.

Use the angband targets at rephial.org instead of the unangband targets.

Yep -- that was just my bigotry showing. I'm an old unix geek, so I find it trivial to get and build on unix (and my Mac, because I ignore the GUI). I'm sure that the dos command line tools are good enough (once the fiddly libraries are worked out). I can't speak for the ease of using GUI tools, as I haven't found one I like enough to really learn (on any platform).

(Well, GUI debuggers for non-compiled languages are useful enough. But I still generally write small programs in cat and edit larger ones in vi.)

Don't the months fly by quickly? I could have sworn it was only a fortnight ago I posted this...

Anyway, as of tonight, nightlies will no longer load savefiles from before revision 907 a.k.a. the big object list change. Sorry for the inconvenience that will cause, but it's necessary.

EDIT: I should add that squelch settings and autoinscriptions will be messed up.

Actually, my rod of recall stopped working after one of the earlier changeset changes, which i had assumed was part of the saveset breakage.
They work with new characters, so it's not a big deal. Just noting.
