    3.4.1 vs 4.01

I have played mostly on 3.4.1 and enjoy it very much. Being at my friend's house I downloaded the latest version 4.01 and do not like it. I get hungry way too quickly; I died trying to get back to my home in the town. Ridiculous. It was fun finding a splendid dagger on level 1, but dying to hunger so quickly was a bit of a kill joy. Also, doesn't seem I can sell items I find in the dungeons, which is what I love about 3.4.1.

In other news, Umber dropped a $30,000 book of spells at 1100' as well as Galadriel's phial. That was... insane. I then accidentally disconnected the removable drive I was playing from and lost my game, having last saved before I killed Umber and got his mad loot. Oh well. Still, that game is going very well as I have dragon armor that shoots acid ball as well as a rod of fireballs and two rods of curing; not bad for level 24 character!

So what version do most people play these days?

Also, I assume version 4.01 has new items and artifacts that version 3.4.1 doesn't have. Is there anyway to add the new items/artifacts to version 3.4.1?

4.0 should have zero gameplay changes compared to 3.5, though 3.5 does have some gameplay changes compared to 3.4. I forget what exactly they are. Hunger mechanics haven't changed in ages though; if you were getting hungry faster then it's because you were playing a character with regeneration (or your point of reference in 3.4 was a character with slow digestion). Remember, if you're starving, that potions give you some nutritional value.

As for selling, no-selling is turned on by default; it prevents you from getting money from selling gear, but compensates by giving you larger gold drops in the dungeon. I do recommend giving it a fair shot before you denounce it, but if it's really not your style then you can switch back to the old behavior. It's a birth option, so hit = during character creation to access it.

Finally, there haven't been any new items in the game since...3.2, I think? Maybe even earlier.

Thanks Derakon for the reply. I may give it another try, but for now am enjoying 3.4.1. Just picked up a Glaive of Pain on level 27 which has +30 damage on it! Insane. Even with little strength, it does more damage than my whip of slay undead with +11 damage. I am contemplating replacing my ring of protection [+11] for a ring of Accuracy [+17, 0] I have 90 AC without the ring of protection. The glaive has 0 to-hit being [0, +30] so I'm thinking it's a good idea. Thoughts?

The Glaive of Pain is one of the very rare, end-game quality, artifact weapons. Especially in the hands of a Warrior with 6 blows! You'll want to use Enchant Weapon and Enchant To-Hit scrolls to bring up it's 2-Hit as far as you can (+15 is maximum). For me =Accuracy usually trumps =Protection, but you'll soon replace it with =Damage or =Speed. If the Glaive is too heavy, store it at home for now and save up those Enchant scrolls. Good luck!

Yes, Ingwe, I had +to-hit scrolls in mind (got one on it so far). My magics in the endgame will let me enchant it up, too (like you said to 15). I picked up 3 special weapons on a level 29 just now, including Nimthanc which is dealing 168 damage! (I bought the accuracy ring and then didn't even use it as I picked up a ring of damage (0,+8) and a ring of strength <+3>. Been picking up a lot of dragon scalemails and as much as the 200 fireball is awesome, I think I'm gonna stick with the acid fireball and slightly better AC (though damn NiM disenchanted 3 AC from it. He did drop two {special} weapons, tho, which sold for $23,000+.

So, yeah, gonna save Glaive of Pain for later. I'm playing High-Elf Paladin.

Protection and Accuracy rings are both pretty much bottom-tier; they will have next to no effect on your survivability or hit rate. Instead you should watch out for Rings of Damage, Constitution (more HP is always welcome), or Strength/Dexterity if they help you get extra blows. Rings of Speed of course are also great, and sometimes you may need a ring that gives elemental resistance or Free Action, if you just can't find it anywhere else.

So I decided to give 4.01 another shot and I'm actually really enjoying it as the drops are much more useful (and much better) than in 3.4.1. By CL14 I already had 68AC, gauntlets of Paurnen, leather sandles of FrA [1,+11], a hard cap of wisdom, a small shield of RFire, an amulet of wisdom <+3>, armor of RAcid [16,+8] and a longbow of extra shots [+16,+8] which is *devastating* at circaDL20. I got all of this before reaching 1000'. At dl23 I've sinced picked up a fixed phial of m'lady, a ring of strength, a ring of dexterity, a ring of ice.

Now I like a lot of the improvements, but one that I haven't been able to make sense of yet is the missiles I'm collecting. I have a bunch of missiles taking up room in my pack and I don't know what they are. I can't get any details on them. If I go to fire one, I see arrows, because I'm holding a bow. If I put on a sling and go to fire one, I see shots and pebbles. So I fired off all the non magical arrows I don't want and all the shots/pebbles, but I still have 96 missiiles! I have 57 arrows. What are the rest of them? I guess I'll have to find some other ranged weapons and hope they reveal the rest of the missiles I'm carrying. (Did I pick up 39 bolts somewhere?). Is there a simpler way to drop unwanted missiles? Why can't I get details on what I'm holding from my inventory menu? Thanks!

To look at the contents of the quiver, use '|' direct from the keyboard or while in the equipment or inventory menu (it's stated in the text at the top of the screen when in those menus). Unstated, but also works - use the arrow keys while in the equipment or inventory menus and you will cycle between the equipment/inventory/quiver menus. The quiver is organized by numbers 0 thru 9 unlike the other menus which are organized by letters.

At the bottom of my inventory you can see s), t) and u) which are all grayed out and don't give details of what's in the quiver. I cannot do anything with them. I can't drop them or look at them or anything.

If I press the 'f'ire button then I can see what types of missiles I actually have, but I still can't drop them or get info about how much damage they deal since I am firing them....

Okay, now I see. Using the arrow keys after pressing | lets me cycle between what I'm carrying, what I'm wielding/wearing and what's in my quiver. Thanks!

As was said, hit "|" while looking at your inventory.
