As you are a High-Elf, the SI on seeing has no value to you. In essence you are choosing between resist confusion and resist blindness. At level 18 (900'), light and dark hounds are becoming common, which makes RBlind a good thing.

My advice: if you have money to burn you could get the cap of seeing, but don't sell Thengel in any case. I think that you would be better served by obtaining a staff of teleport, a wand of teleport other, more CCW, a source of Free Action, and probably other stuff (more Phase Door maybe).

Why aren't you using the rapier of frost? With you only getting one blow, it is far superior to the main gauche. (Even if you lost a blow, I might recommend the rapier.)

i'm not sure what the weight difference is but that was my concern.

if i'm already blind and i then put on the cap of seeing, would that cure me?

The weight of the helms or the weight of the weapons?

Thengel is 2lbs, essentially the same as other "cap" and "crown" items. "Helm" items are rather heavier. You shouldn't be losing mana due to your armor weight (that limit is constant), but you are close to encumbered (STR of 11 means you start losing speed around 70lbs).

As for weapons, you only get one blow with the 3lbs main gauche, so the 5lbs rapier won't be worse.

if i'm already blind and i then put on the cap of seeing, would that cure me?
No, and the same is true of other resistances. If you had weight to spare you could carry it as a swap -- put it on and quaff a CLW when you get blinded. (Confusion requires CSW.)

I was talking about the weight of the weapons and the encumbered weight limit.

does what i'm wearing count towards encumbrance?

also, where do i find the weight limits based on str?

may be a good feature to add to the char sheet: weight carried/max weight

then if your past max weight you would start slowing down...

I believe so, but I would need to double-check. The relevant weight is the "Burden" on the C screen -- 64.7lbs in your case.

I usually just read tables.c directly, but it is probably on one of the spoiler files.

            adj_str_wgt is as follows:
            Code:
            STR Wgt
             3 50
             4 60
             5 70
             6 80
             7 90
             8 100
             9 110
            10 120
            11 130
            12 140
            13 150
            14 160
            15 170
            16 180
            17 190
            18 200
            18/10 220
            18/20 240
            18/30 260
            18/40 280
            18/50 300
The relevant bit of code is in xtra1.c (for 3.0.9), with j = "Burden" and i from the table above:
            Code:
            if (j > i / 2) p_ptr->pspeed -= ((j - (i / 2)) / (i / 10));
Interpreting the integer math, this means that your speed loss as follows:
            Code:
            Burden Speed
            < 60% 0
            < 70% -1
            < 80% -2
            and so on
In your particular case, STR=11 means your weight limit is 130. You are at full speed up to a burden of 77.9lbs, but at 78.0 you will drop to -1. At 91.0 you drop to -2.

I usually don't pay too much attention to the exact breaks except at the 18/50 or higher level. 180 is -1, 210 is -2, and so on for post-stat-gain characters.

Along these same lines, does telepathy bypass blindness? I just got dor-lomin and I just swapped it for my crown of seeing, which was my only rblind. Actually, I have very little experience with telepathy - this is my first char to get low enough to find equipment with it (got it off glaurung, who I killed with gurthang, heh). Is telepathy great? I guess I'll find out soon enough...

Telepathy generally is great. There are some monsters which are not detected by telepathy though.
But, remember: You cannot read scrolls or cast spells while blinded.
For casters it is usually better to swap between telepathy and rblind and have always potions or mushrooms to cure blindness available.

Cool. I'm playing a HTW right now, so the telepathy is looking great. The only issue is that it's slightly annoying not knowing when you're "blind" or not, for pickup purposes. Whatever though, I like it anyways.

As long as you don't have to cast spells or read, and the monster actually has a normal (enough) mind.
