I think making rods of probing drop much more earlier (right from the start) would be a nice change.

Not really. It just has higher chance of success (IIRC it tries multiple times in a row).

Max enchantment is +15. Above that it won't work no matter how many times you try.

Maybe spells for that too to early books.

Probing is most useful for new players, but occasionally when/if savefile compatibility gets broken and I lose my monster memories I want to fill that back ASAP. For that reason I have sometimes just walked around clvl 0-30 with probing with clvl 50 char just to get all that info that is still missing (it's always the most shallow monster types that get full ID last).

As a noob I realy enjoy the unknown. Rod would be too powerful, same as spell I think. Maybe the cost of spel or its dificulty, chance to destroy rod maybe, could weaken it a bit. The reason, why I think it is too strong is that the spell shows you a weaknesses instantly. You simply shutter jelly with a frost and do not spend week or two altering the dungeon with dagger to avoid the shivering pile... there would be always posibility to not use rod/spel, but temptation would be very strong...
what about some kind of grimoires? with range of beasts, could be only partial (consumable, instant knowledge of lesser hounds, animals, udneads, dragons...) but it is new feature... your solution is easier to implement...
Is possible in vanilla to lost memories? I thing other way than broken software... In other variant I encounter regular deleters of memories (and I think it is marvelous, to not know where I am and who is the guy threatning me)
