Just found the One Ring for the first time scumming for !health. Quaffed a !enlightment upon entering the floor and...what's this "a plain gold ring" I thought, heck that's just Vilya. How apt as a flavor name.

I suspect you activated the One, yes? One of the possible "Bizarre" effects is a permanent loss of experience.

I did activate it once, I don't remember which time. That would explain it I suppose. Still, it seems more trouble than it's worth. That's why I waited until after winning to try it out, turns out that was a good strategy!

On the contrary, wearing the One makes winning much, much, easier. Carry a source of Restore Life Levels so that when you fight something with big experience you can regain just before you kill it. Try the comp character, that started with it from the beginning. It really is quite awesome!

Indeed! I just grabbed it from a vault on lvl 90 (!) and went down to lvl 92 to slap the Tarrasque around like a red-headed kobold. Immunities all around is pretty sweet!

Only downside is that I can't take it off. Oh well, having a dwarf priest with remembrance and a staff of the magi has its perks.

Perhaps it was because I ran around with it after winning. But what I noticed was that restore life levels did *not* restore the level. My experience was marked in green, and was not the experience until the next level as was normal before level 50, but instead was my absolute experience. But my level was in yellow (47, reduced from 48 I believe) and there was no way apparently to get my previous level back at all. Maybe a bug?

At one point it seemed it was draining levels that could never be regained -- seems like it's actually impossible to play with it on for any length of time, sort of disappointing.

I think it was a warrior, but I don't recall; too long ago. With an item that powerful, aggravation is a non-issue. That was the old experience-drain mechanic. Last found it a few weeks ago. The experience drain was much more noticeable, enough so that doing this today may be difficult or even impossible, but if I'm already up to clvl 30-ish, I wouldn't think twice about it, regardless of depth or other gear.

For those @ who eschew donning "evil" equipment, I am wondering...

....There's actually already a tiny bit of new terrain (lava and a new type of rubble) already in 4.0....

now that there's lava around, if @ is lucky enough to find the One Ring, can @ just kill Sauron by throwing the thing into a pool of lava?

Deep inside enemy territory, alone, surrounded by countless hordes of terrifying enemies led by even more terrifying enemy generals, the last thing you would want is to alert everyone of your presense [sic]....

At some point, those countless hordes of terrifying enemies and even more terrifying enemy generals would, if they had any sense, be absolutely petrified of the truly terrifying @! He's slaughtered townfolks and monsters by the hundreds and even thousands. All that death and destruction leaves its mark on the psyche. It's no wonder he'll often wield Morgoth's crown in the end. Aggravation items shouldn't necessarily be avoided. There comes a time to announce, "There's a new Dark Lord in town, and his name is @! Come to me and despair!"
