Question about materials: ethereal, mithril other

I read about different properties of materials an this rises numbers of questions.

1 How acid damage reduction works? For example 1000 acid damage
    Boots10000:2
    Armor 500:2
    Gauntlets 250:2
    Cloak 125:2
    ets

    Or

    1000 : 5 (parts of armor)

    And than 200 : 2

So if character is wearing full serpent and a crown or ethereal slippers he receives 100 acid damage.

2 Does cloak counts as additional cover of body part against acid if torso already covered by armor?

3 How fire and acid damages the armour? It decrises base armor with -1 with every successful breathe(attack) until 0 and than breaks. Or instant burns, choruses?
And if fe boots 5 5 become 3 5 can I repair them with scroll Enchant armor?

4 Are there some other hidden properties of materials like with acid? For example metal encases electricity damage.

5 I noticed ethereal material compared to mithril saves 1 magic point. Does this affect also silent movement and spell failure chance?

Acid tries to damage one equipment slot at random. If that slot has an armor you get 50% of damage. If not you get full damage. Item that has zero AC counts as no armor (gauntlets [2,-2]). It doesn't have to succeed in damaging the armor, just trying is enough to get that 50% reduction.

Ethereal items are light. That's all. What you noticed was armor weight effect on spell points. Material itself has nothing to do with that.

Materials in angband have very minor role. In fact they don't have any real role at all, just names in object.txt with appropriate settings. No code or math just names. If you rename mithril armor to bubblewrap armor it would still have exactly same features.

I have to say, I somewhat envy the imagination of asking a question like this. I remember finding the different types of wands and the different kinds of $'s in the dungeon interesting and mysterious when I was a kid playing moria. While I understand these games much better now and can actually win them, understanding that it's all just a bunch of numbers makes it a much thinner experience.

Previously I dropped game because couldn't defeat Saruman.
Now I decided to look at him as script with predictable behavior. No meter how strong monster, there are rules of game and its behavior. I learned it and it was easy fight. However thinking about game like this makes it less enjoyable.

            +1 for bubble wrap armor
            He did the mash.
            He did the morgoth mash.
            The morgoth mash.
            It was an angband smash.

So that is where those "soft pops" came from.

That post's going to make me grin like a lunatic every time I 'hear a soft pop'!
