    Rogues

I've not really played with these much before. Any tips on playing them in the early game? They seem to suck at fighting and don't have magic missile to deal damage. How are you supposed to kill stuff at the start of the game?

Do you put all your points into dex and str and play it like a warrior with a few utility spells?

Rogues are quite good at melee. Just play them as warriors with excellent detection. Use stealth and pick your fights.

What race? A half-troll rogue is a melee machine. For a hobbit I'd pick up a ranged weapon.

        re: rogues

Rings of the mouse quickly boost stealth to a Point where almost nothing Wakes up (until you attack it). During that Phase i get an enchanted bow or crossbow and maybe shoot some good xp Targets to Level maybe to 10-15. Once see invis and free Action are on board i dive to around DL 34-36 and gain stat potions there. Currently my rogue delivers around 250 melee damage at CL 33 / DL 36. I had to get used to no range attacks from the start as well tho!
        Blondes are more fun!

Rogues are just barely worse fighters than paladins. They're also pretty decent with ranged weapons. Play them like fighters who can cast a few detection spells for the early game. Once you get more INT, they become fighters with an unlimited supply of Haste Self / Resistance, great stealth, and the ability to perfectly detect objects from a distance.

            detct object is pretty cool

See title ... enter new Level ... check for stat potions ... either go for it or just take the stairs again Can't remember a char that gained stats as quickly as the rogue i am playing currently.

It rocks. It's great for rapid endgame buildup of consumables, too.

Thanks for the tips, so I guess you put a load of points into dexterity to get a couple of blows in the early game and treat it like a warrior with a few utility spells.

I had tried kobold rogues with high int thinking I'd play them like a mage, but with just one blow a turn they barely did any damage at all in the first 5 levels.

Yeah, you'll run into problems with them as mages. Among other things, they don't get any attack spells at all.

Don't they? Well that's definitely worth knowing

All these years playing and I've never tried rogues before (or indeed rangers or paladins more than a handful of times). The lack of mana bugs me particularly in the early game.

rogues get stinking cloud and spear of light which of course doubles as an attack against light sensitives.
