    kill yourself with mass banishment?

I just used a scroll of mass banishment and ended up with 9 HP left - i was just wondering if you can kill yourself that way?

The warning 'you loose health' caused me to completely ignore banish and mass banish in the beginning because I was afraid to kill myself. IIRC the scrolls/ staves just flat out tell you, you will loose health but don't say how much. The spell, only visible to mages on the other hand, tells you it's I think 4 hp per monster with banish and 5hp per monster with mass banish. So you can estimate how much you are going to loose and decide when it might not be a good idea to banish.

Yes, early on and well into the mid-game, these great finds can also be your undoing.

"I'll just get rid of those "U" summons and it will all be good.... Wait... Oh, no...there was a demon pit on the other side of the dungeon!"

Well, that was ?Banisment, but the same idea. Off to roll another character....

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

And those figures are the same for staffs and scrolls?

I think it's actually 1d3 for Mass Banishment and 1d4 for Banishment...or the other way around. But yeah, it's the same regardless of your method of casting the spell; Mages just get it in unlimited supply.

it is... when I was new I picked up a scroll of banishment and I didn't know the damage is based on the monster count so I used it on a breeder... then I died.

I still remember some very old game where I used banishment on pit, only to find out that there were several on that level. What made that worse was that killing those monsters on that ancient computer (and because delay settings) took some time so I could watch my health going down and down and down...

I honestly never remember that these scrolls cause damage to myself and have never noticed my health go down after using them. In my current character, I have used ?banishment numerous times on Hellhounds. Maybe there were only 5-10 or so on the level? Not sure. Enough to make me quickly grab the scroll and read it, tho.

Does Mass Banishment remove uniques, too?

                      No.

Only *Destruction* will remove uniques (and everything in fact in its radius) from the level (not from the game, they're still marked "alive"). *Destruction* is probably the best escape in the game in terms of "# of turns guaranteed solitude." The Create Doors spell is perhaps second best assuming some distance between you and any monsters. With no uniques, Mass Banishment is probably the 2nd best, and assuming you detected or have telepathy, you can know ahead of time the safety of the damage you'll take so it can be perfectly safe to cast. *Destruction* has the downside of destroying objects, though.

People should try playing TomeNET. In this variant, all escapes have been nerfed to oblivion, making the game "interesting":
                        - no more Teleport Level
                        - Teleport Other has a saving throw (same as slow/sleep monster and such)
                        - Banishment/Mass Banishment costs 1d(monster level / 8) per monster and wipes 60% of your max hps (if you survive the first hp drain of course)
                        - *Destruction* makes you "Knocked Out" for a long time

I hope this won't give ideas for V

Tomenet should be renamed SlapJackRL. It's like, Q summons, you're surrounded by Us, do you slam your teleport key in under a quarter of a second? Oh, sry, better luck next time...

Nope. There is already plenty of dying going on in good old V *with* the "powerful" escapes. These escapes are fairly rare, too. (Working up a mage to high level and finding Kelek's is also counted as "rare", or taking a serious investment). Slow/sleep are already useless after the beginning as they don't work on anything "interesting."

Stunning surprisingly does. Mage has couple of spells that both stun and damage.
