... even to a clev 33 Dwarf Priest with 18/217 Wis, 98% saving throw, 0% fail on Heal and Teleport Other, enough mana for 30 Orbs of Draining without mana restoration. Surely, after about those 10-15 earthquakes, they must all be dead, right? No? Ah, here are some more. How many? Well, I can't quite tell, what with all the earthquake damage around here. Well, Just One More Turn at 50% hitpoints, stunned, slowed, what could happen? (One of those stomach - churning sequences of --more--....--more--...--more--...where you just hold down the space bar and hope for the best....nope.
Repeat after me: "Gravity Hounds are dangerous, run away" (YASD)

The worst part of it was: I *recognized* the growing "All Will Fall Before My Mighty Orb-o-draining!" "invulnerable" feeling, that smug "I've got a winner here" delusion, and reminded myself that "there are strong, dangerous monsters out there that can eat your measly hit points for breakfast." I was "wedded" to the room because there was the first pack of Barrow wights and I wanted to light the room and watch them dissolve prettily to my dispel undead prayers. When I saw the grey "Z" I thought "ah crap" and backed out of the room, but the biggest mistake was not just TP-level right then and there (there was a long straight corridor leading out of the room). Thought enough earthquakes would do it, I didn't count the "embedded" messages though.
There has got to be some sort of very interesting psychological study that can be done to the phases of fear and overconfidence, delusion, and hopeful thinking that arise from starting a weak character and building it up into a strong one.
Anyway, back to familiar mage territory now, where I can spam detect to my heart's content.Comment

I'd say not using teleport level after a long suspenseful list of -more-'s is probably worse than not using it at the first sign of trouble, but ya, I agree with your general assessment. Nothing's worth a dead character (in angband).Comment

Oooh, I don't know. Sometimes a bit of fun is worth losing a character for.Comment

Well, in realtime variants, I admit there's some fun to be had getting eaten alive by gravity hounds, but in vanilla I just don't see it.Comment
