    Restarting to optimize town

Just wondering, am I the only one who does this? I find myself restarting several times in order to get a town placement with the stairs close to the Home and ideally also close to the Black Market. As the game progresses, I hate having to run around the town when all I usually do is swap stuff at home or check the Black Market. Scumming to get a good layout rather than good treasure! Wish there was a way do just set the town up well without restarting sometimes more than a dozen times.

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

Let me see if I can recreate the proposed new town layout from the last time this came up...
    Code:
    #######
    #.....# <--- townspeople spawning area
    ###:###
    #.....#
    #.123.#
    #.4>5.#
    #.678.#
    #.....#
    #######

If I was building a town on top of Angband, I would probably choose that proposed layout over the current one.

I wouldn't want to live next to the black market.

Just think of the effect on house prices!

Open plan, surprisingly unspacious, yet handy for the shops. Close to all major transportation route.

We could always make the layout of the town important by introducing a minigame where the town comes under attack and you have to barricade/blockade it strategically and set up defenses.

I check armorer also. I just recently bought BoS +8 for about 20k. Felt cheap.

Barring early game weapon store is the most useless one. It never has anything better than what you find in dungeon.

Or just turn the town into a menu.
Something I personally would prefer, even though it's less flavorful.

In competitions, where turn count is at a premium, I'd think people would restart to optimize the town to avoid unnecessary turns.

You have to use the savefile we give you. Restarts are basically playing against the rules, even if you're restarting after death.

We have had a few competitions recently that let you roll-your-own characters, but I don't think any of those relied on turncount.

Well, only use of town is to buy lantern, after this it is not worth returning.

Lanterns aren't sold in the town any more, unless you get lucky with the Black Market.
