    Artifact Rings?

How do artifact rings show up? I've been delving in 3.5 for about a week now, and I've seen all manner of ring and amulet, but none of them have been "special", BUT, I also haven't been identifying every "Ring of Constitution" that I find.

Do the artifact rings show up as "Ring of Constitution" or "Gold Ring"? (does that question make sense?)

They will show up as a new, unrecognized "flavor". For example, the Ring of Power 'Narya' might be generated as an "Emerald Ring" in one game and a "Malachite Ring" in the next. The same holds true for artifact amulets. There are no artifact Rings of Constitution or anything like that; each artifact piece of jewelry is a separate "type", sort of.

But if you see "a Plain Gold Ring" then that's the One Ring and you should go get it.

Keep in mind that the artifact rings tend to not show up until very late in the game, minus except maybe Ring of Barahir which shows up a bit earlier. Typically most of my winners have found at least one of the rings of power, but I've had a few characters that got to the late game without ever finding 1 of them.

Phial, Star, Arkenstone, The One, Grond and Iron Crown of Morgoth have pre-determined base item types that no other item can have. I think all others have different base type each game.

I was excited last night when I picked up "An Arkenstone" after killing Smaug, but then got whacked by so many other things I never got to use it.

There was this game where my character was almost ready, searching 98 for some more uniques to kill and vaults to loot, and then saw The One. Clearing my way into the vault and picking it up however, I realized it was only "a Gold Ring", some shallow flavour (like ring of protection) that I had missed in the early levels and that for whatever reason was now generated in this deep vault.
