I love playing rogues (five of my ten winners happen to be rogues, three are rangers, and two are paladins). I don't think they need any boosting.

Warriors are often suggested as an easy starting class for new players, that might explain why they are quite common.

I agree on elf and half-elf, either they should be merged or get some specials to make them more interesting.

I like the suggestion to remove Half-Elf and replace Elf with something more descriptive -- Wood Elf? I think that alone, without even making any stat changes, would go a long way to boosting their use, since they'd no longer look like the compromise choice between Human and High-Elf.

I think it might be nice to see the [wood] elves get a flavorful low-power bonus. They're very arguably the weakest race overall, so they might appreciate a dwarf-treasuresense style of feelgood buff.

Sense animals? Requires ESP by type.

I thought of something similar - sense life. There is even a low-level spell for that in Faangband, available to rangers.

I like this one, though Timo's is perhaps more thematically correct.

Dunadan rangers... *drool* I wish I could win...

And on topic, how many ranger winners are from before 3.5.0, which made VERY substantial changes to the class, and how many are from after that?

What has changed? To me ranger looks just like before.

In older versions, a ranger cast like a cleric, mostly cure spells. Now, it casts arcane magic, e.g. magic missile.

...what. No. Rangers have used arcane magic since the first version of the game, where they were ridiculous munchkins. It's true that they're currently the only class that casts arcane magic and can also cast Cure Light Wounds, but rangers have never had access to anything even remotely resembling the priestly spell set.

Rangers have always been arcane casters. Maybe you think paladin?

This thread is very cool. I would be curious to see how this would look for (say) Hengband. Simply because of how many races and classes there are, there must be some that nobody has posted a win with.

Re: elves, I think the Wood Elves approach is the sensible one. Stealth, archery, and quicker leveling than High Elves.

Rangers have always used the mages spell set, from moria, to old angband to current, certain variants like Oangband use a druid subset of spells however, but Timo is right Paladins have always used the priest spell set.

You could just re-name Elf Yeek since they're already so weak. In which case you could re-name High-Elf to plain Elf, since all the elves were basically superior to man (immortal, no disease, strong, graceful, ...)

Half-elf should just be dropped or replaced with a different race. They're a very non-Tolkienish race (all the Tolkien half-elves became either high-elf or dunadan types) and distinguish themselves by being a cross between a weak race and the boring race.
