    diclining strength

    Hi,

I started to play Angband a couple of weeks ago, did not get very deep yet. Yesterday i was cursed by a skelleton kopold or something in L9. And now my strength went from 18/20 to 11. I tried to remove the curse but this works on items only. What could I do? Wait until the Charakter advances?

    greetings

No curse causes STR drop. You must have fought some monster that drains STR like red jelly. Or you got very unlucky nexus swap, which can't really be fixed except by another nexus swap and truckload of luck.

Getting level up removes stat drains. Other ways to restore are mushrooms of vigor and potions of augmentation, life, strength and brawn (unless you play older version where potions of restore <stat> still exist)

Is your STR in yellow or Green? If yellow it means that you were drained, either by fighting a monster that drains strength, or repeatedly stepping on a trap that drains strength. Just level up once and it will go back to full. If you examine your character screen you will see the actual strength (in green) next to the current one (in yellow)

If it's green and at 11, you're in more dangerous territory. The drain is permanent until it is raised by stat potions. This could have happened by drinking a bunch of the gain 1/lose 1 potions and having it hit Strength a lot, or by hitting a nexus breathing monster (vortex or hound are the most likely) and getting stats swapped.

        Does brawn actually restore STR?

Yes, any +Stat potion will restore the stat before adding the new point.

AFAIK all stat-boosts first restore, then boost.

Are you sure of this ? My impression was that +/- potions dont restore.

I think Timo's correct here. Unless this was changed recently.

Why play guessing games? The source is there for perusing...

Technically, the +/- potions will only restore if they first successfully lower the random other stat. But that would mean you have other stats permanently at 3, which takes some doing.

                  Relevent code to look for:
                  case EF_BRAWN in effects.c
                  do_dec_stat and do_inc_stat in spells2.c
                  player_stat_dec in player.c

All right. I ll try to find a mushroom of vigor. And then I get a battle axe, and than I return to this kobold. Let's see who has some strength over when we are finished...

                    Thanks for the anwer!

Sorry, I'm a bear of very little brain. Do you mean that it will restore unless the decreased stat is 3, in which case it won't, but it will still increase the target stat, but not restore?

And sorry, can't understand code (or even know where to get it from).

P.S. The reason I asked originally is that I'm sure I've had experience of brawn increasing, but not restoring, my strength - i.e. STR goes up by one, but is still yellow and still less than 'Best', although 'Best' has increased by one, naturally.

For the +1/-1 potions, you only get the benefit if you also suffer the detriment. I believe this was originally implemented so that having stat sustains didn't remove the potions' downsides, but nowadays sustains don't block the drain, so the only time this comes up is if the stat's internal score is already as low as it can go.

As for your memory, dunno what to tell you. Maybe that was a previous version with different behavior? *shrug*

Thanks for the info. It probably was when the downed stat was at 3.

You now know not to drink a potion of Contemplation (which raises your Wisdom at the expense of a random stat) or Intellect (which does the same for your intelligence).

There are also potions of Brawn (Strength), Nimbleness (Dexterity), and Toughness (Constitution) that raise a stat that you want to go up and you can hope that they take off a point of Wisdom or Intelligence.
