That is a penalty to your hit value due to wearing heavy armour. The heavier the armour the higher the penalty.

You can read about issues like this in the spoiler files:

One final question... If I saw Hard Leather Armor (-1) [6,+1] what would the (-1) mean?

Note that the pseudo identifications like {good}, {average} and so on are "feelings" that your character gets about the item.
If you are wearing anything i.e. {average} and you get hit by acid attacks, look at the messages. You probably get messages like
your soft leather boots {average} is damaged.
These attacks will not change the {average} pseudo IDs. It is possible that you are wearing in fact soft leather boots (+1/-2) or such, which grant no longer any protection.

    !
The -3 means that it has been damaged somehow (acid) and now provides a bonus to AC of 11 - 3 = 8 which is less than what it provides when it is at {Average} or (+0)

The abc...jkl correspond to the equipment you are wearing. They form a matrix with the possible effects they can provide. So if there is a mark in the column under the the letter c in the rows for Elec and Fire this means that you are wearing a ring on your left hand that grants you resistance to electricity and fire.

If there is a mark under the @ column that means you have an innate/racial bonus.

    Does that help?

    1. Leather Scale Mail [11] {average} is eather Scale Mail [11] (+0) is AC 11 added to your armor
    2. Long bow (x3) good. The x3 is the damage multiplier.
    3 x (2.5 + bow_to_dam + arrow_to_dam)
The good means that bow to_dam > 0, so you will be doing a minimum of 10.5 avg dam/shot, and probably quite a bit more.
    3. The alphabet is your equipment slot. The @ means intrinsic class/race bonuses.
